The Charlestown Volunteer Fire Department fire protection district is comprised of the western half of Oregon Township, all of Charlestown Township, and part of the northern corner of Utica township totaling approx.
the City of Charlestown purchased a 1955 American-LaFrance open cab pumper, from the civil defense for $200.00, of which is housed at the city hall with the 1937 Chevy for city fire runs.
Due to the city hall needing additional room, the 1955 American-LaFrance city truck was moved to the new Park Street station and housed with the 1953 GMC and a newly purchased 1954 GMC front mount pumper.

Charlestown was established in 1808, named after one of its surveyors, Charles Beggs, upon three hundred acres, of which three were designated for a town square.
From 1811-1878 Charlestown was the county seat of Clark County, but as Jeffersonville had surpassed it economically, the county seat reverted back to Jeffersonville in 1878.
In 1940 the population of Charlestown was 900, but it swelled to 13,400 due to the building and operation of the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant (INAAP).

Charlestown Township supervisors at Monday's meeting voted 4-to-1 to adopt an earned income tax for the preservation of open space.
Hogan said that Charlestown Township is "short changed" and that as much as $450,000 in taxes is collected by other townships from Charlestown residents.
Because Charlestown Township adopted its own levy, the township will now be able to collect the tax generated by Charlestown residents.

Charlestown announced plans fro annexing most of the Utica Township part of the plant stating that the land would develop better if it was within one municipality.
Charlestown Mayor Bob Hall said the city's boundary is also within three miles of the land Utica wants to annex.

CHARLESTOWN - Two "suspicious" fires in less than a week destroyed nearly $50,000 worth of hay, leading residents to voice their concerns about the lack of a police patrol which they say would put an end to vandalism in the township.
Those fires, along with other incidents of vandalism throughout the township, including graffiti, broken beer bottles littering the streets and destruction of residents' property, sparked outrage over what one resident described as the township supervisors' lack of concern for the safety and well-being of residents.
Township resident Lisa Scottoline, whose property is adjacent to the scene of the first fire, expressed anger that the township will be spending $3.1 million to preserve the 270-acre Stonorov farm as open space but will not seriously consider adding cops to Charlestown Township.

Serving as director of Charlestown Playhouse, a nonprofit preschool and kindergarten, for 67 years, Miss Betty believed that play was an essential part of childhood.
The Charlestown Playhouse began with children that met and socialized in the Stonorov home and grew to a school when Frank B. Foster, Miss Betty's father, donated the land in 1930s.

Charlie Philips presented the historical commission's report and said the township was trying to pass an ordinance prohibiting owners of historic structures to be able to tear the structures down by applying for a permit for demolition by neglect.
