This township lies in range 7 north, 3 west, and is bounded on the north by Warren county, on the east by Walnut Grove township, with Emmet on the south and Blandinsville on the west.
The township was not settled until 1855 or 1856, to speak of, although a few settlers came as early as 1834.
Sciota township, according to the annual report of the county superintendent, for the school year, ending June 30, 1884, has 452 children of school age, 420 of whom are enrolled in the schools.

The successive erections of the last-named four townships reduced the area of Hopewell to its present boundaries, which are, on the north, Cross Creek township; on the northeast and east, Mount Pleasant and Canton; on the south, Buffalo; and on the west the township of Independence.
Hopewell township at its erection in 1781 embraced in addition to its present territory that of the townships of Independence, Cross Creek, and Jefferson, and part of that of Mount Pleasant.
West Middletown Borough.--West Middletown is situated within the boundaries of the township of Hopewell, in its northwestern part, on the dividing ridge between the waters of Buffalo and Cross Creeks, and on the main road leading to Washington borough, which road forms the main street of the town.

In the township the population was spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
As the population of the township grew, with 30 resident land owners in 1722 and 83 in 1774, churches sprung up to meet the demand by religious residents.
The northern edge of the township is a ridge of quartzite and sandstone (the Cambrian Chickies Formation) including Valley Forge Mountain (or Mount Misery), which was mined for quartz in the 1700's through the mid-1800's.

From the date of his coming to America, 1853, until 1868, he lived in Pennsylvania, where he was employed in iron mills, then came to his present home in Charlestown, Minnesota, and has here filled various town offices.
Porter was the first claimant of land in Redwood county; took land in Charlestown, July 14, 1864, and has resided here with his family since 1866.
The family immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1846, but since 1868, he has lived on his farm in Charlestown.
