The towns of Charleville and Mézières are the joint capital of the Ardennes department, Champagne-Ardenne region, in northeastern France.
In the French part, the river has cut a steep-sided, sometimes deep valley between Saint-Mihiel and Verdun, and beyond Charleville-Mézières it meanders through the Ardennes region in a narrow valley.
They lie along the Meuse River, 52 miles (84 kilometers) northeast of Reims and 9 miles (14 kilometers) southwest of the Belgian frontier.

From early 1915 the Chief of German General Staff, General Erich von Falkenhayn, had decided that, for the foreseeable future, it was not going to be possible to force a decision against the enemy on his western battle front.
Although he had decided to concentrate his effort on the Eastern Front for the spring of 1915, Falkenhayn was not prepared to let the enemy gain the upper hand in any way on his western battle front.
