Charlevoix County is a county located in the state of Michigan.
Lake Charlevoix, with 17,200 acres (70 km²) surface area and 56 miles (90 km) of shoreline, is a very prominent feature of the county.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44, 25.20% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older.

 Green Party, GOP face off in Charlevoix
CHARLEVOIX - Incumbent Charlevoix County drain commissioner and Green Party member Jo Anne Beemon faces a challenge in the Nov. 2 election from a Republican county soil erosion officer she accuses of undermining her authority.
She accuses the county board of improperly delegating her duties to commission-appointed county soil erosion officer Marc Seelye, who's running against Beemon for the drain commissioner post.
Beemon said a recently reworked county stormwater ordinance is "heavily weighted toward industry and development," and this year vowed to impose her own, stricter standards - though she doesn't have that authority, prosecutor Mary Beth Kur told commissioners.

 Jail overcrowding elsewhere enriches Charlevoix County - 02/14/04
CHARLEVOIX -- Troublemakers are welcome in Charlevoix County, as long as they’re guests of Sheriff George Lasater.
Many inmates at the county jail, expanded from 25 to 85 beds in 2001, are sent from other northern Michigan counties.
The jail on Thursday was holding 26 Charlevoix County inmates, 37 from Grand Traverse County and six from Emmet County, Lasater said.

The Charlevoix County State Bank donated a 2,000 gallon used gasoline truck, which was converted to a water truck.
In 1986, Keep Charlevoix Beautiful decided to buy a new truck, which would also be used in parades throughout the state in advertising the City of Charlevoix.
This was done to carry the Charlevoix Venetian Queen and her court in parades.

 CHARLEVOIX COUNTY: Judge tosses whistleblower lawsuits
BELLAIRE - A judge dismissed whistleblower lawsuits against Charlevoix County and Prosecutor Mary Beth Kur filed by two employees in Kur's office.
Victims assistance coordinator Sandra Ward and office manager Jacqueline Rozema alleged in their lawsuits that they were subject to retaliation and a hostile work environment after giving depositions in another whistleblower lawsuit filed by Kur's former chief deputy prosecutor, John Jarema, in 2003.
Ward and Rozema's attorney, Grant Parsons of Traverse City, said his clients were attempting to retain seniority and pension benefits as they seek other positions in Charlevoix County government outside the prosecutor's office.

 Charlevoix prosecutor loses to former employee
CHARLEVOIX - Charlevoix County Prosecutor Mary Beth Kur fired her then-chief deputy, John Jarema, two years ago.
Jarema received a $50,000 settlement from the county last year after filing a whistleblower's lawsuit claiming he was fired as he attempted to expose alleged corruption and mismanagement in Kur's office.
Jarema promised to be a more in-court prosecutor, blasting Kur's record of rarely handling trials herself.

But Charlevoix County Sheriff George T. Lasater insisted he'll follow the county district court's orders, which call for the removal by Thursday of three manufactured homes from four acres [that are] owned by Lyle Barkley off Camp Daggett Road.
Barkley on Monday submitted to the county district court a demand for an emergency injunction, and a restraining order against Bay Township and Charlevoix County preventing them from removing the homes.
Richard Licht, supervisory agent for the FBI's Traverse City office, said he had spoken with Lasater regarding the threats, and offered logistical assistance, but that his agency is not involved.

Koop said that there has not been too much action on the home invasion case yet, and that the county was still gathering information and reports at presstime.
According to a release from the Antrim County Sheriff's office, while investigating a home invasion that occurred on Saturday, Oct. 15, officers learned that suspects were staying at the residence on Six Mile Lake Road.
