  Charlevoix council takes on upkeep of lighthouse
Charlevoix resident Mike Bergeon is among the local historical society members working with city officials to preserve the historic lighthouse at the western end of the Pine River Channel on Lake Michigan.
CHARLEVOIX - A lighthouse at the west end of the Pine River Channel has welcomed boaters to Charlevoix for 120 years.
Now, Charlevoix Historical Society members and city officials are working to ensure one of the community's most treasured images is renovated, protected and preserved.

The first lighthouse to be built at the entrance to the Pine River was actually located at the end of the north pier.
This pyramidal wooden tower served from 1885 to 1914, when it was transferred to the end of the south pier.
In 1908, the home was purchased by the government to be used as a dwelling for the keeper of the Charlevoix Lighthouse.

The Charlevoix lighthouse depot is located on Lake Charlevoix on the north west side of a narrow channel that goes into a smaller portion of the lake before it flows into Lake Michigan.
As the Lighthouse Service was merged into the Coast Guard most depots were closed down for less centralized facilities spread out further from each other in the lakes.
A rail system is installed in the floor of the building where lighthouse tenders would unload supplies and they would bring them into the building with it.

 Seeing The Light - Charlevoix Pier Lighthouse
By the mid 1800's, lumber was king in Michigan, and the Charlevoix area was graced with a seemingly endless supply of tall pine forests surrounding Round and Charlevoix lakes.
With this change, the station was renamed ‘Charlevoix South Pierhead Light Station, and with two lights to keep on opposite sides of the harbor entry, Keeper Ripley found his workload more than doubled when he exhibited both lights for the first time on the night of April 14, 1914.
Despite the additional workload, Ripley was evidently well suited to life at Charlevoix as he continued to serve as the single Charlevoix Keeper until November 15, 1923, when he retired after holding office at the station for a remarkable thirty-eight years.

The Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland, Maine has just been awarded a $25,000.00 from the Samoset Resort in Rockland, Maine to be used toward the opening of its first phase, in the spring of 2005, at its new location on the City of Rockland waterfront.
Because of its large concentration of historic old lighthouses the state of Maine is known around the world as "The Lighthouse State." Dozens of lighthouses were built along its coastline where shipbuilding and the sea played a vital role in the development of America.

 Michigan Light Stations
The lighthouse was transferred to the Holland Harbor Lighthouse Historical Commission on 5 August 1978.
The lighthouse was built in 1874, and the light now shown from the tower is fixed and flashing white, the flashes being of 40,000 candlepower.
Several miles to the northward is Big Sable Lighthouse, on the point of that name, distinguished at night from Little Sable by having a fixed white light, and by day by the color of the tower, banded in fl and white.

The location of the lighthouse happens to be on the 45th parallel of lattitude, half way between the north pole and the equator.
The lighthouse was built in 1870 as a small wood framed house, with the lantern room penetrating up through the roof.

Not a bad run for a building that at the onset was built in the wrong place.Late in 1850, the federal government set aside a piece of Beaver Island on which to build a lighthouse to meet the needs of the growing lake transportation.
The contractor who had agreed to build the light tower for forty-five hundred dollars asked for help locating the spot, and received it, but was directed to a location two miles east of the allotted land.
Finally, in 1856, the Lighthouse Inspector sought to settle the matter by requesting Lorenzo to prove his claim to the title.

Peggy and I spent a week in July traveling to Bay City, Michigan, to visit her cousin and along the way were able to visit several of the lighthouses on the shores of the great lakes.
This lighthouse is still active, the house reportedly haunted and for $2 we climbed the tower for a breathtaking view of Lake Michigan.
I didn’t think I’d be as interested in lighthouses as I was, but am anxious to return to visit more of these historic landmarks.

A tour of Lake Superior’s Copper Harbor Lighthouse has the added benefit of a ride in a boat similar to an early 20th century lighthouse launch.
The lighthouse opened for public tours this year, with exhibits, period settings and historic interpreters in period garb.

At the time I visited Mackinac Island (in 2002), I wasn't as obsessed with lighthouses as I am now, so I visited only the ones that were on our route.
Lighthouses have a very special, spiritual meaning for me! They became a symbol that really encouraged me during some dark days of my life.
