Charley Kurtsinger, who would become the Admiral's regular rider, was up on him for the first time on July 1 in the six-furlong Great American Stakes at Aqueduct and went off the second choice to Foxcatcher Farm's Fairy Hill.
Kurtsinger had been injured in a bad spill so Wayne Wright was given the leg up on August 20 for the Whitney Stakes at 10 furlongs.
Charley Kurtsinger was fully recovered now and back on the Admiral; George "The Iceman" Woolf had the mount on Seabiscuit.

To commemorate the return of the Pimlico Special (G1) and promote the release of the film Seabiscuit, Magna Entertainment Corp. plans to re-enact the 1938 match race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral at its Pimlico Race Course on May 16.
Pimlico-based horses will play the roles of Seabiscuit and War Admiral, and local jockeys will play the parts of jockeys George Woolf and Charley Kurtsinger.
Also on hand will be Racing Hall of Fame jockey and Santa Anita Park General Manager Chris McCarron, who took on the role of Kurtsinger in Seabiscuit.

My Father J. T (Tommy) Taylor trained He Did----also Victorian(1930 Coffroth Handicap), Head Play, Charley O, Can't Wait, Ariel Lad, Southarlington, Patch, Threesome, Prince Khaled in addition to breeding Grey Flight (Phipps bought her at the Keenland sales)who, I believe, still holds the American record for producing the most stakes winners.
He brought out Charley Kurtsinger, who lived with my Mother and Father as an apprentice.
Incidentally, in that 1936 Kentucky Derby, He Did, who was really a 1 1/16 horse at the most, was leading into the stretch when Kurtsinger drew his whip left handed and had it snatched out of his hand by a spectator along the inside rail.
