		Daniels, who wrote "Carolina (I Love You)" about his youth, was the son of a lumberjack and was raised with a love of bluegrass music.
		The Charlie Daniels Band was formed in 1970, with Daniels joined by Barry Barnes (guitar), Mark Fitzgerald (bass), Fred Edwards and Garry Allen (drums), and Joel "Taz" Di Gregorio (keyboards).
		When Daniels moved to Epic in 1976, there was a concerted effort to turn the band into a major concert attraction, despite the fact that at 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 20 stone Daniels was no teenage idol: he hid his face under an oversized cowboy hat.

		I know of at least two spinoffs to this song that went somewhere: Mark O'Connor's The Devil Came Back to Georgia," and a version by a rap group named KMC Kru called "The Devil Came Up to Michigan." The Devil was scratching records in that version.
		This is a tune that Charlie's cleaned up when he plays it in concert these days because of personal convictions.
		The first time I saw Charlie was in 1989, and he played Uneasy Rider '88, the sequel to this song.

		Well, this certainly ain't "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" (Daniels' best known hit), but it's definitely a pleasant surprise.
		Hymns and gospel greats are here given a variety of treatments ranging from blues to hillbilly and ballads, with a honourable mention due to the wonderfully named Bobby Jones Super Choir.
		Admittedly things do get a mite cheesy at times, particularly when Daniels' vocal strays dangerously close to "club singer" style - if you get my drift; but at other times Daniels is in inspired form, such as in the "cheesefest-becomes-rock-out" version of "Just A Closer Walk".
