Francis thought the best time to announce the arrangement was in December, backed by an endorsement of Francis' return to the sport by the judge who headed the 1989 Canadian inquiry into the Johnson case.
Francis secured the endorsement, but the Montgomery-Jones camp only announced the firing of ex-coach Trevor Graham, with their agent Charley Wells even denying a Francis connection.
In the past week, Francis issued statements and interviews, saying he was wrong in encouraging Johnson to use performance drugs and that Jones and Montgomery proved him wrong about saying non-doped athletes couldn't win at the elite level.

Steroids' powerful, troubling attraction / Olympic track trials raise question: Must athletes cheat to win?
Fifteen years ago, with Canada wallowing in a sports doping scandal, a track and field coach named Charlie Francis sat before a government panel and testified under oath that essentially all elite Olympic athletes were cheaters.
Francis said they all used banned performance-enhancing drugs like his protege, the disgraced Ben Johnson, who won Olympic gold and set a world record in the 100 meters at the 1988 Seoul Olympics only to be unmasked days later as a steroid user.
Tim Montgomery, the world-record holder in the 100 meters, has publicly denied using illegal performance-enhancers, but The Chronicle has reported he admitted to a federal grand jury that he regularly received a steroid-like substance known as "the clear" and human growth hormone from BALCO over an eight-month span in 2001.

 Hurricane Francis
Charlie was just a sweep of the area in Daytona compared to what we expect from Frances as it bears down on this area with at least 3 times the force than we got from Charlie.
You may think at first that I am nuts for saying a blessing, but, If Charlie had not come when and as it did, the people of Daytona would be scoffing at Frances as they have the other Hurricanes in recent past.
During Hurricane Charlie, they sent the Tampa and Ocala people to Daytona for them to find out that they would have been missed if they just stayed home, but rather, they came here to find themselves put in harms way.

Jones to leave Francis for Nike's sake
Marion Jones is to announce this week that she is no longer working with Ben Johnson's former coach Charlie Francis after coming under severe pressure to cut her ties with him from her biggest sponsor, Nike.
Francis claimed that she was capable of challenging the world 100 metres record of 10.49sec set by Florence Griffith Joyner in 1988.
Nike is worried that by working with Francis, who admitted under oath in 1989 encouraging Johnson and other athletes he coached to use steroids throughout their careers, Jones's reputation will be tarnished beyond repair.

ABC Sport - Athletics - Jones regrets association with former coach
Francis was banned for life by Athletics Canada after his protege Ben Johnson tested positive for steroids after winning the 1988 Seoul 100 metres Olympic final in world record time.

Jones and her partner Tim Montgomery, the world 100 metres record holder, attracted a rash of unwelcome publicity when they were coached briefly by Francis at the start of last year.
