Hunter played with the sidegroup T.J. Kirk in the mid-'90s, a band who derived their name from the cover material they exclusively played: Thelonius Monk, James Brown, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
Hunter took drummer Scott Amendola with him for his next project, an ambitious instrumental remake of Bob Marley's Natty Dread album in its entirety.
Hunter concluded his run at Blue Note with 2001's Songs from the Analog Playground which saw him collaborating with vocalists for the first time, ranging from labelmates Norah Jones and Kurt Elling to Mos Def.

Charlie's recent move to Brooklyn may make it easier to maintain his relationship with Blue Note Records, but really resulted from his need for new challenges, and an eagerness to be around musicians who make him feel like "a little fish in a big pond".
Regardless of the reasons, Charlie was there and he was called onstage early into the show, and what was supposed to be a tune or two turned into an all-nighter...
Hunter's talent also shines in his effort to not be overtly present on the record, proving that understated, supportive playing is more the sign of a great musician than any self-indulgent chops.

Hunter’s music is all about groove, but he’s able to mine an amazing number of different grooves and doesn’t get bogged down in the jamming for jamming’s sake school of guitarism.
Hunter’s “Darkly” continues to mine a mysterious vibe, but the reference point this time is a straight-ahead jazz group with flute, again a sound that harks back at least three decades.
Hunter and his group are able to reference these earlier sounds without really ever coming across as retro, in large part because Hunter and Ellis both are modern jazz musicians whose solo voices come across as completely their own.
