CHARLIE ROUSE & RED RODNEY: Social Call
Rouse had a stint with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1949, but was forced to leave the band when he was unable to locate his birth certificate which he needed in order to get a passport for Europe.
Rouse and Rodney both blaze through their improvisations with such ingenuity and spontaneity that I was quite genuinely surprised and shaken out of whatever doldrums I'd been in before I hit Play on my CD player.
Rouse, Rodney, and a wonderful rhythm section, including Albert Dailey on piano, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Kenny Washington, explore these landscapes with abandon, rebelliousness, a touch of humor, and somehow, even with all that combined experience, with the eyes and ears of children.

SoundStage! Allen Eager - In the Land of Oo Bla Dee, 1947-1953; Charlie Rouse/Red Rodney - Social Call
Charlie Parker clearly intimidated Eager, who at times plays tentatively on the two tracks that feature him (Eager doesn’t play on a third selection from the date).
Rouse, who died in 1988, spent many years with Thelonious Monk and later founded Sphere, a quartet that still performs and records (Gary Batz now occupies the saxophone chair).
Rouse was 60 when Social Call was recorded, Rodney 57, but they both sound young and agile.

Rouse was always a modern player and he worked with Billy Eckstine's orchestra (1944) and the first Dizzy Gillespie big band (1945), making his recording debut with Tadd Dameron in 1947.
Rouse popped up in a lot of important groups including Duke Ellington's Orchestra (1949-1950), Count Basie's octet (1950), on sessions with Clifford Brown in 1953, and with Oscar Pettiford's sextet (1955).
Charlie Rouse's unique sound began to finally get some recognition during the 1980s.

 Charlie Rouse: Hail The Individual
Charlie Rouse was the victim of some unstated critical consensus, which always seemed to mask the fact that he found his own way in the eye of the bebop hurricane.
Rouse's individuality was however of a different order to Getz's, and throughout the album it has the unexpected effect of highlighting the rhythmic emphasis of his playing, which might well have been in the forefront of Thelonious Monk's thoughts when he gave Rouse the gig with his quartet.
The fact that both Rouse and Rodney were in at the beginning seems to raise the bar a notch or two.

Epistrophy by Charlie Rouse   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
Although he had an extensive career, tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse is best remembered for his decade (1960-1970) as a member of the Thelonious Monk Quartet.
This historic event, originally released by Landmark and reissued with one extra selection on a 1997 32 Jazz CD, finds Rouse in prime form despite the fact that he had just seven weeks to live (before passing on from lung cancer).
The date was special from the start, with producer Orrin Keepnews getting Rouse to say a few words to the audience about his time with Monk.

Rouse, Charlie [Charles] (Washington, 6 April 1924 - Seattle, 30 Nov 1988)
In the 1960s Rouse adapted his style to Monk's work, improvising with greater deliberation than most bop tenor saxophonists, and restating melodies often.
His distinctive solo playing with Monk may be heard on Shuffle Boil (1964), in which he alternates reiterations of the principal thematic motif with formulaic bop runs.

I love bossa jazz, but let’s face it, during the early 1960s there were so many instrumental boss nova albums cut that it’s sometimes hard to get enthusiastic when yet another surfaces from the back catalogues.
Rouse, best known for his tenure with Thelonious Monk in the late 50s and into the 1960s, puts together a very authentic band here, including dual guitar work by Kenny Burrell and Chauncey “Lord” Westbrook, bassist Lawrence Gales, drummer Willie Bobo, conga player Potato Valdez, and Garvin Masseaux on chekere.
That track, a Rouse original titled “One For Five” comes from a 1965 session the remainder of which remains previously unissued.

Charlie Rouse : Albums : Two Is One : Summary
By this point, the assumption that listeners would like this record simply because they liked Charlie Rouse's work with the Thelonious Monk Quartet would be presumptuous.
Rouse and company take a sharp left turn on the second side, during which they perform the title track (in two sections) and the brooding "In His Presence Searching." "Two Is One" begins with a bassline in 9/8, drums in 6/8, and cello and tenor in 3/4.

Charlie Rouse (1924-1988) can accurately be described as being celebrated for not being famous, having become firmly identified over many years as Thelonious Monk's nearly-permanent sideman.
One purpose of Riverside Records' Jazzland subsidiary was to attempt to focus attention on wrongfully overlooked artists, which made this meeting of the saxophonist and the label extremely appropriate.
Rouse is highly effective in a program that makes no references to his employer and features both Blue Mitchell and the too rarely heard pianist, Walter Bishop, Jr.

Charlie Rouse | Bossa Nova Bacchanal
A case in point is Charlie Rouse, the vastly underrated tenor man best known for his long tenure with Thelonious Monk in the late '50s and '60s.
Rouse does nothing to soften his sharp-edged, sinusoidal tone but lacks nothing in melodic invention, and his acerbic lines provide a citric zing where this kind of music is often too sticky sweet.
The tune is reminiscent of something that might have fit on Wayne Shorter’s contemporary Blue Notes, and it features a nice Rouse solo different from his Monk guise, as well as fleet work by Hubbard and Tyner.

It could also be properly applied to the overall jazz efforts of tenorman Charlie Rouse.
Ever since Charlie, who was born in Washington, D.C., in 1924, came onto the jazz scene in the '40s to play with Dizzy Gillespie, with Billy Eckstine's legendary bop-star-studded band, and with Duke Ellington.
One important factor both in gaining more attention and in bringing his playing talents into sharper focus has been that for the past couple of years Charlie has been working regularly in the quartet of Thelonious Monk.

At one point in that thread it was speculated that Charlie Rouse might have been on the date.

He played in the bop big bands of Billy Eckstine (1944) and Dizzy Gillespie (1945), but made his first recordings as a soloist only in 1947, with Tadd Dameron and Fats Navarro.

The major problem currently is that the steps needed to record, transfer the recording to a computer, and then publish on the Internet are quite involved, unless you are very patient and have some friends who can help you with the tricky computer bits.
Incidentally, Charlie Hunter has jumped on the Internet bandwagon and has posted a full live concert on his website, that is available to download (at a price).
