Charlie Shavers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Charlie James Shavers (August 3, 1920 to July 8, 1971) was a swing era jazz trumpet player who played at one time or another with Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, Johnny Dodds, Jimmy Noone, Sidney Bechet and Billie Holiday.
Charlie Shavers died from throat cancer in New York in 1971 at the age of 53.
His friend Louis Armstrong died while Shavers was on his deathbed, and his last request was that his trumpet mouthpiece be burried with Armstrong in his coffin.

Shavers’ solo reached a climax after 16 bars but Charlie fluffs a high note, blows some desultory trills and is chided good-naturedly by Buddy Rich as the take terminates in the third chorus.
At ballad tempo Charlie Shavers’ playing takes on a sweet quality but this should not obscure the fact that his control is exemplary throughout the range of the trumpet.
Shavers tries out the theme of All The Things You Are while Nat Cole remarks, “I want to see the parade,” meaning that he wants to get away from the studio promptly.

 Charlie Shavers: Complete Recordings
Charlie Shavers was a technically accomplished player, but he also had a gorgeously expressive tone, a richly unique sense of melodic improvisation, and—as an heir to Louis Armstrong—a dazzling ability to take a wide variety of material and raise it to his level with brio, enthusiasm, and notes that ring with joie de vivre.
This material is from a period in which Shavers co-led a quartet with another unsung artist, pianist Ray Bryant.
Shavers and Bryant swing it softly in a shuffle rhythm without sacrificing any of the melodic attraction, soulfully making it a jazz tune.

Shavers is at the helm of a handful top-notch units, all capable of keeping pace with his boisterous precision.

The title cut is a real romp, with tenor saxophonist Hal Singer and trumpeter Charlie Shavers not only constructing exciting solos but riffing behind each other.
With the exception of the standard "With a Song in My Heart," Singer and Shavers wrote the remainder of the repertoire, and with the assistance of a particularly strong rhythm section (pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Osie Johnson), there are many fine moments on this enjoyable set.

For the most part, Charlie Shavers was content to stay in the shadows of big band leaders like Tommy Dorsey, his long-term employer.
As a trumpet player, singer and songwriter, Shavers produced some of the most forward-leaning material of the 1940s, prefiguring bop, rhythm and blues, even rock and roll.
This disc includes 17 tracks Shavers cut for both the Standard and World transcription libraries from 1944 through the early 1950s, documenting this versatile performer in his various stylistic moods.
