Topic: Charlie Spivak

In the News (Fri 25 Dec 09)

  Charlie Spivak
Spivak began playing trumpet when he was ten, gigged locally as a teenager and worked with Don Cavallaro's Orchestra.
Spivak was cast in the same role with Ben Pollack (1931-34), the Dorsey Brothers (1934-35) and Ray Noble.
Spivak formed his own band in November 1939 (financed by Glenn Miller) and, although his first orchestra failed within a year, his second attempt shortly after was more successful; in fact Charlie Spivak became a major attraction throughout the 1940's and he kept his band together until 1959.

 Solid! -- Charlie Spivak
Whichever the case, Spivak studied trumpet as a youth and played in his high school band.
Spivak's new band emerged as one of the top commercial outfits in the country, surviving the post-war band bust and continuing until the late 1950s.
In the late 1950s Spivak moved to Florida, where he continued to lead a band until 1963, when illness forced him to briefly retire.

Big Band Library: "Feedback and Follow-Up" Re: Charlie Spivak
After I wrote my biographical sketch of Charlie Spivak, I heard from a woman who worked at Ye Olde Fireplace for almost 25 years.  She was employed as a server for several years, then worked in the bar for about 18 years.
"Spivak had been booked at Ye Olde [ Fireplace ], he liked it so well, the reception was such a great turn-out, he and the owner had a verbal agreement for Spivak to be our house band 6 nights a week, no cover charge.
We had many great years.  Reservations had to be made sometimes two wks in advance, folks would drive from Columbia, S.C., Atlanta, Charleston, and Charlotte, N.C.  For several years in November we taped the evening to be televised.

Charlie Grubbs has since died, and the glories of the nightclub he created recede further into memory with each passing year.
Spivak's stepson Kevin Ingram (Dubby's son) revived the Spivak band and played engagements for a couple of years as Kevin Spivak and the Charlie Spivak Orchestra, always with "more enthusiasm than talent," as he admits with a laugh.
The trumpet played by Charlie Spivak for so many years is enshrined in a glass case in the music department at Furman University, along with all of his charts, preserved as a resource for future generations of musicians.

This was late in 1948 and some of her greatest recognition as a female vocalist came with the Spivak band.
Miss Daye and Spivak were eventually married March 31, 1950, in Greenwich, Conn. Announcement of the marriage was made in a radio broadcast by the orchestra leader at Torrington, Conn., where the band was playing at a March of Dimes benefit.
Spivak left the band and she and Spivak moved to South Miami, Fla., where they bought a home and which served as the base of operations for the Spivak orchestra.

It didn't hurt that one of Charlie's close friends was Glenn Miller, whom he could turn to for advice on being a bandleader, when Spivak organized his own group in late 1939.
Dave Dexter, a music critic, convinced Spivak to discard the mute.  Actually, Charlie was quite a versatile musician.  He often blew 'hot' in the '20s and early '30s, and later pointed out that he enjoyed the blues.
When the Spivak band performed around New York City, recorded regularly, and guested on the radio (including the "Spotlight Bands" program), Stevens' mellow voice was heard often and, as a result, he was named one of the nation's top singers.

ost of Charlie's best-known recordings were with the Benny Goodman Sextet (which retained the Sextet name even after it became technically a Septet).
On the studio cuts, Charlie's solos are inventive, but generally briefer and more reserved than on the jam sessions or live broadcasts.
Two notable exceptions are "Honeysuckle Rose," which features an extended Christian solo, and Charlie's famed composition, "Solo Flight," which became a popular hit after his death.

While he was with Spivak in Williamsport (Penn.) in the mid-1950s, the late Dodo Marmarosa was hired to fill the piano chair.
Dodo was playing flawlessly, but Spivak warned him that the next set would contain a complex Manny Albam chart that he might want to look over.
Dodo looked up at Spivak and said, "Don't worry, Charlie, I won't need the music." He ran a chromatic scale up the piano.

The most famous characters included Charlie and Doris Hickenlooper, a mis-matched married couple; The Professor, a Germanic expert scientist in everything and nothing; storyteller Somerset Winterset; jazz musicians Cool C's and Progress Hornsby; and the mechanical figures of the great clock of Baverhoff, Bavaria, striking one another in addition to the hour.

From the good sound quality and the selection, however, one can hazard a guess that these are transcriptions recorded for radio in the 1950s, well after Charlie Spivak's heyday as a bandleader.
Nevertheless, his distinctive trumpet tone, sweeter than Harry James', remains appealing and serves as the focal point of the arrangements.
None of Spivak's hits are included, but there are good instrumental treatments of a number of 1940s standards.
