Established in 1935 as Charlotte Municipal Airport, in 1954, the airport was renamed Douglas Municipal Airport after former Charlotte mayor Ben Elbert Douglas, Sr.
The airport gained its current name in 1982, and is currently a major hub for US Airways.
To accommodate the booming growth of the facility, a new 325,000-square-foot passenger terminal opened in 1982, and the airport was renamed Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (CNN) -- Charlotte-Douglas International Airport was shut down Tuesday following the discovery of an unplugged screening device.
Officials decided to evacuate everyone in the airport gate areas and have them rescreened in case they had passed through the inoperative magnetometer.
International Total Services, a private contractor based in Cleveland, Ohio, was running the screening area where the magnetometer was situated, according to US Airways spokesman Rick Weintraub.
