While in Charlotte, the team played at American Legion Memorial Stadium.
The team returned for the abbreviated 1975 campaign as the Charlotte Hornetsand lasted until the league ceased operations in the midst of the 1975 season.

In the original WFL schedule, the three division champions plus one wild-card were to qualify, culminating in a "World Bowl" on the evening after Thanksgiving (at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla.).
This last format was followed, except that Charlotte said it couldn't participate due to a lack of funds, resulting in Philadelphia being selected as the East's second qualifier.
In contrast, the WFL's 1974 schedule called for 20 regular season games and no pre-season games; in 1975, it was 18 regular season games and two pre-season games.

So great were the WFL's financial struggles that some of the teams relocated during midseason, and a couple of the teams disbanded altogether before the league as a whole did.

Ah, yes, the WFL, another (and the last) in the long line of Gary Davidson/Dennis Murphy second league creations (see WHA and ABA) for other examples.
There was a player's strike over free agency in 1974 (the WFL lasted from 1974-75), which began and ended during training camp/preseason.
It also spawned a number of rule changes that the NFL soon copied (the goal posts were moved back to the end line from the goal line), the rules with regards to downing punts were changed, and it undoubtedly spurred the stodgy old NFL to extend its regular season to 16 games in 1976.

Great site.It brought back many,many memories.The one that sticks out the most is of a me and my dad.My father passed away not to many years after that.Thanks to all the Charlotte Hornets who made it possible for him to see pro football live.
That's when my Grizzlies were regular season champs with a record of 17-3 and playing at home in the semi-final game against the Florida Blazers for the right to go the original World Bowl but lost in a driving rain 18-15 yet breaking a young 13 year old's heart.
