  United States Mint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mint was made an independent agency in 1799, and under the Coinage Act of 1873, became part of the Department of the Treasury.
During its two stints as a minting facility, it produced both gold and silver coinage in eleven different denominations, though only ten denominations were ever minted there at one time, in 1851 (silver three-cent pieces, half dimes, dimes, quarters, half dollars, dollars (gold), quarter eagles, half eagles, eagles, and double eagles.
To date, the Manila Mint is the only US mint established outside of the Continental U.S. and was responsible for producing coins for the colony (one, five, ten, twenty and fifty centavo denominations).

Cornwallis muttered that Charlotte was a "hornet's nest," and the citizens proudly adopted the appellation as the village's nickname.
Charlotte was chosen because of its already established iron works and because of the railroad network that connected it to seaports.

The Philadelphia Mint sent Franklin Peale to inspect the mints at Charlotte and Dahlonega, with Peale arriving in Charlotte in late September 1837.
Unlike the Dahlonega Mint, the Charlotte Mint never struck a three dollar gold piece, although a pair of $3 dies was sent to the facility in 1854.

 The Charlotte Branch Mint
Coins were minted at the facility uninterrupted until North Carolina seceded from the Union on May 21, 1861 and the Confederacy took control of the Mint.
As with the Quarter Eagle, the Charlotte Mint produced two designs of Half Eagles during the course of its operations: the Classic Head and Liberty motifs.

Reid's mint operated only from about July to October of 1830, when he evidently ceased coining due to claims that his issues were worth less than their stated values.
Mint Director Samuel Moore advised Few by letter to visit the Philadelphia Mint before undertaking this task, as it would be beneficial to see what such an operation entailed.
Franklin Peale had toured the mints of Europe on a fact-finding mission in 1833-35, and his discoveries were perfectly timed for the building of the southern mints and the upgrading of the Philadelphia Mint.

The name “mint” is derived from the Temple of Juno Monetos, Rome where coins were made as early as 269 B. The present mint, operating the most modern machinery for the manufacture of coins, is indeed a marked contrast to the early day methods of coining money.
After the design of a gold coin was approved, the mint staff proceeded to prepare dies made by covering the surface of the die with a thick coating of transfer wax, which, when pressure was applied, transferred the tracing which was in pencil.
The Denver Mint was authorized by the Act of April 21, 1862, and it operated as an assay office unit 1906.

The Charlotte branch of the mint was burned in July 1844 and notwithstanding the larg volume of business transacted before the fire, Congress was reluctant to provide funds for its rebuilding.
Charlotte is centrally located in America's largest textile manufacturing section, but the absorption of small mills into large chains, with tremendous plants variously located according to their power and labor needs, has removed from the city proper most of the mills of which the people were so proud at the turn of the century.
Charlotte's Cameron Morrison is identified in North Carolina history as the "Good Roads Governor," although he later lamented that the use of this appellation inferred that his good deeds were limited to one field.

The mint's first superintendent, John H. Wheeler, furnished a press release to area newspapers on December 4, 1837 announcing that the mint was ready to begin receiving deposits of gold bullion.
Quarter eagles of this type were not minted until 1840, but both denominations carried this durable design, the work of Christian Gobrecht (chief engraver 1840-44), through the end of coining operations at the Charlotte Mint.
A Miner's Convention was held in Charlotte on October 8, 1844 with the goal of presenting a united front for the rebuilding of the mint.

Founded in 1933 and opened to the public in 1936, the Mint Museum of Art is North Carolina's oldest art museum.
The original building, completed in 1836, was located in uptown Charlotte and operated as a mint until the Civil War.

Charlotte Branch Mint coins have a C on their reverses, except for the quarter and half eagles of 1838 and 1839, when the mintmark appeared between Miss Liberty and the date on the front of the coin.
Coins were minted in Charlotte on a continuous basis until the North Carolina seceded from the Union on May 21, 1861 and the Confederacy took over the Mint.
All Charlotte coinage is at least scarce; much is rare, some of it extremely so; and because of its beauty, historical significance and good investment potential, it is much sought after by coin collectors, numismatists, museums and investors.

Interestingly, after the Charlotte Mint became a reality in the same state in 1838, the government allowed the Bechtler family to continue its private coinage operations, which was done until circa 1852.
The dies for this coinage were made at the Philadelphia Mint, and in transmitting them the director of the Mint urged Col. Wheeler, the superintendent, to hasten the coinage, and mentioned that although the dies are dated 1838, there was no objection to using them in 1837.
Today, the former Charlotte Mint is an attraction in the city and houses a nice collection of art and antiquities along with some reminders of its coinage history years earlier.

The mint was to be a two-story, stucco-covered brick structure, having a basement constructed of "hammer-dressed" stone.
The Dahlonega Mint positions were very political, with changes often being made upon a shift in a political party's power in Washington, a situation that caused much internal conflict among the mint personnel.

All known examples are softly struck at the center of the obverse and on the reverse the eagle's right leg at juncture of right wing and the shield.
Most are not well impressed and others show extremely poor obverse detail due to having been produced from a bulged die.
