Charlottetown is situated on its namesake harbour which is formed by the confluence of three rivers in the central part of the island along its south shore.
The areas to the west, north and east of downtown have been developed in recent decades with several residential and commercial/retail developments, although the outer regions of the city are still predominantly farmland, as is an area in the centre of the city where an Agriculture Canada crop research station is located.
Charlottetown Airport is the city's main airport, and is served by Air Canada Jazz, WestJet, Sunwing Vacations, and Northwest Airlines, with flights to and from Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, and Detroit.

Charlottetown is a federal electoral district in Prince Edward Island, Canada, that has been represented in the Canadian House of Commons since 2004.
From 1966 until 2004, most of the Charlottetown riding was part of the riding of Hillsborough.
96.4% of the riding of Charlottetown was previously part of the Hillsborough riding, and 3.6% was previously part of Malpeque.

Charlottetown Research Station is probably unique in that its research staff and resources were increased by 25 percent during the 1970s as a part of the 15-year Prince Edward Island Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP), which was signed between the federal government and Prince Edward Island in 1969.

Established by 300 French colonists as Port-la-Joie in 1720, it was renamed Charlottetown in 1768 and was incorporated as a town in 1855 and as a city in 1875.

Nancy White was born in Charlottetown, the rock band Haywire was formed there, and folk singers Teresa Doyle and Lennie Gallant have lived in the Charlottetown area.

Three small district heating plants were constructed in Charlottetown in the 1981–85 period under the auspices of the PEI Energy Corporation, a provincial crown corporation.
The hot water is distributed from the Charlottetown District Energy Plant at 85°–120°C, and it returns at 70°–90°C. Thermal losses from the system are very small relative to the amount of heat being transported to all the end users.
The Charlottetown District Energy System is fuelled by a combination of municipal solid waste (45 percent) and sawmill residue (45 percent), with only 10 percent generated by oil.

Designated natural areas exist within the drainage basin: Royalty Oaks, a 4 hectare mature red oak stand, believed to be the only one of its kind in the province, is protected, managed and interpreted in East Royalty.
Other details of interest include the 57 rare vascular plants within the watershed (25 are, not surprisingly, wetland species) and the presence of several shore bird species on the extensive tidal flats.
The French were the first Europeans to occupy the area on a continuous basis beginning in 1720 at Port La Joye guarding the mouth of the river.

While the economy of the area has traditionally been dominated by agriculture, other early activities included ship building at Fullerton's Marsh, a shingle mill, pasteurizing plant, and several brick kilns in the Keppoch and Southport areas.
This would include an expanded City of Charlottetown, taking in the entire Charlottetown peninsula, a southern municipality south of the Hillsborough River and a western municipality to the west of the North River causeway.
The Commission's recommendations were accepted by the Provincial Government and the new Charlottetown Area Municipalities Act came into effect on April 1, 1995, creating the enlarged City of Charlottetown, the Town of Cornwall and the Town of Stratford.
