Charlton County was named for Robert Milledge Charlton (1807-54), a jurist, U.S. senator, and mayor of Savannah.
the county seat of Charlton since 1901, became the focal point for transportation after the arrival of railroads in the 1880s and grew to become the county's largest city by the end of the nineteenth century.
According to the 2000 U.S. census, the county population was 10,282 (68.6 percent white, 29.3 percent fl, and 0.8 percent Hispanic), a 21 percent increase since 1990.

Judge Robert M. Charlton of Savannah was the son of T.U.P. Charlton who himself served 6 terms as Mayor of Savannah and Judge of the Eastern Circuit of the Superior Court.
Charlton was (is?) in the 1st Congressional District and in the Southern Judicial Circuit.
Charlton sent many men off to the Civil War and had to survive reconstruction shortly after becoming a county (only 11 years between becoming a county and the end of the war!) There had been very few slaves in Charlton mostly because there were not many plantations.

Early this morning Baker County Sheriff’s Office deputies and special agents from DEA swept through Baker County and Charlton County, Georgia and began arresting several of the thirteen (13) defendants (see attachment) who were indicted on methamphetamine and marihuana related charges.
The investigation further revealed that once the drugs arrived in Charlton County, Georgia, it is alleged that James Dwayne Merrett, age 43, and his brother John Charles Merrett, age 37, of Charlton County, Georgia, distributed the drugs in Baker County, Florida.
Charlton County, Georgia is just across the St. Mary’s River and adjacent to Baker County.

Based on their investigation on Cornwell, the BCSO working in conjunction with Nassau County and Charlton County in Georgia were suspicious about Cornwell’s involvement with drugs.
On October 9, Charlton County Sheriff Dobie Conner was tipped that Cornwell had just gone into the woods at a hunting club off Highway 252 and River Road on the east side of Folkston.
Officers from Baker, Charlton, and Nassau counties along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and family and friends searched parts of the 23,000 acre hunt club for days with no sign of the avid woodsman.
