It was formed on April 1, 1974 as a merger of the municipal borough of Loughborough, Shepshed urban district and the Barrow upon Soar Rural District.

The Borough of Charnwood covers an area of middle England to the north of Leicester and south of Nottingham.
Charnwood takes its name from the ancient Forest which lies in the west of the Borough with the villages of Anstey, Shepshed and Woodhouse forming the border of the new National Forest.
To the east of the Borough the settlements of Barrow Upon Soar, Birstall, Mountsorrel, Quorn, Sileby, Syston and Thurmaston lie along two river valleys and the Grand Union Canal.

Charnwood borough council residents have been reminded that the council does not collect sheet glass for recycling after a recycling collector badly injured his hand collecting recyclables, writes Paul Dossantos.
A spokeswoman for Onyx said: "One of our collectors in Charnwood was on a recycling collection round when he found a box for glass recyclables in which some textiles had been placed.
A Charnwood spokesman said: "Textiles, defined as clean, dry, wearable clothing, household linen, paired shoes, handbags and soft toys should be the only material presented in a carrier bag placed on top of the box.

Charnwood Borough Council wants to know if the pool at Wreake Valley Community College in Syston can be upgraded.
The Charnwood Leisure Centre, which was closed in the summer of 2004, is still under construction, but contractors are hoping to finish by Christmas.
