Charnwood Music was established in 1958 by Francis Wright in Leicester, England with a view of encouraging British composers to write and expand the literature for the standard bass piano accordion.
The name Charnwood was the name of his street while the emblem "Old John" Castle was a landmark in the Charnwood Forest, Leicestershire.
Following the death of Francis Wright in 1997 (aged 80), and the retirement of the other owners Jessie Wright and Pauline Noon, Charnwood Music was offered to Anna and Raymond Bodell, well known personalities in the UK accordion world, on the basis that they would retain in print all the music for the accordion.

The area covered by the reserve was originally part of the Charnwood Forest 'wastes' and the now familiar stone walls were erected during the enclosure period of the early 19th Century, followed by a period of afforestation and drainage.
Gisborne's Gorse, the largest area of woodland on the reserve, was planted during the later part of the 19th Century and is mainly mixed oak, pine, sycamore and spruce, although a number of exotic species such as coastal redwood, wellingtonia and various pines are to be found in certain areas.
Charnwood Lodge is also important for bats; both species of pipistrelle and the rare Natterer's breed here, and brown long-eared and noctule are also recorded.

The Charnwood Forest Canal was an extraordinary, short-lived affair put together during the closing years of the eighteenth century(a time when enthusiasm for canal building in England had reached the peak now referred to as Canal Mania).
Note the temporary siding from the Charnwood Forest Railway that was used while the dam was being constructed, to the left of the photograph.
By 1840, the Charnwood Forest historian Thomas Potter spoke of the canal as being "an unsightly ditch".

We are a group of volunteer licensed ringers (banders) involved in ringing wild birds mainly in the Charnwood district of Leicestershire UK.
The most striking habitat is found in Charnwood forest which includes some wonderful precambrian outcrops.
Although our main site (Charnwood lodge) is actually in the forest the district of Charnwood covers a much bigger area and most of our other sites lie within it.

The Pre-Cambrian rocks of Charnwood Forest are of volcanic origin and can be attributed to a prolonged period of volcanic eruptions from one major crater (now thought to be located near High Sharpley) and a number of lesser vents.
It was not until the Triassic period that the relief of Charnwood had eventually been denuded sufficiently for it to be buried beneath the dry desert clay- sands which later formed marls (figure 1(d)).
It is known that ice associated with the last glacial period, the Devensian, did not reach as far south as Charnwood, although the periglacial conditions of the period may have resulted in significant congelifraction particularly on the most exposed highest peaks.

The upper peaks of the Charnwood Natural Area are formed from Precambrian rocks which are some of the oldest rocks in England and contain internationally important fossils that are the earliest known life recorded in England.
Charnwood Forest has a variety of habitats including extensive woodlands, some of which are remnants of medieval parks, and acid grassland and lowland heath on the hills.
The upland nature of Charnwood produces clear, fast-flowing streams that support an abundance of wildlife including nationally rare animals such as the freshwater crayfish and brook lamprey, and the three large reservoirs in the Natural Area and their associated wetland habitats are important sites for breeding and wintering wildfowl.
