In the United Kingdom, Charter Trustees are set up to maintain the continuity of a town charter or city charter after a district with the status of a borough or city has been abolished, until such time as a parish council is established.

Alumni Trustees: In 1876, responding to complaints that the board was too old and that too few of its members had attended Dartmouth, the Trustees agreed to take one of four candidates nominated by alumni of four years standing for each of the next three vacancies.
Alumni Trustees: In June of 1891, the alumni replaced the 1876 agreement by agreeing to the Trustees' proposal that graduates of five years standing would be allowed to nominate candidates for the next five openings on the board.
The other Trustees, seven at that time, now are known as "Charter Trustees," and the agreement permitted them to select their own candidate if the alumni failed to supply one within a certain time period.
