With "Chasing Liberty," her prey is getting a little bit closer.
"Chasing Liberty" is a modestly appealing romance that pairs Moore with an impressive newcomer (Matthew Goode) and puts the handsome couple in some of the most beautiful locales in the world.
The movie layers its adolescent love story onto a mold originated by Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck in the classic "Roman Holiday." But while Hepburn was a princess and Peck a journalist, Moore plays the daughter of the president of the United States and Goode is the Secret Service agent secretly assigned to guard her.

I recognize, on the other hand, that someday it will be a film a lot like Chasing Liberty that launches her to stardom; while waiting for the right one to come along, I suppose we'll have to sit through some of the wrong ones.
Chasing Liberty doesn't have the romantic spirit of the Linklater film, nor does it have that film's confidence.
Suffice it to say that I was extremely relieved when I learned that "Liberty" is not, in fact, the name of the Mandy Moore character (it's the code word used for her by the Secret Service).

Liberty writers Derek Guiley and David Schneiderman have penned a predictable and superficial boy gets girl/boy loses girl script where all reality is abandoned in favor of plot contrivances and whiny, teenage dialogue.
Ben and Anna cover a lot of ground in very little time, and when they are not being chased to their new locale, Anna bitches about how tired she is of being controlled by her dad and desires the freedom to lead a more “dangerous” life.
Chasing Liberty makes us commit to a fantasy world where the safety of the first daughter is compromised so she can have “fun.”

Cinema Confidential Review: Chasing Liberty (2004)
The movie this time is called “Chasing Liberty” (much catchier than say “Chasing Chelsea,” wouldn’t you say?) The opening shot shows Moore trying on about six outfits for her date.
“Chasing Liberty” reminds me of another movie about a president played by Harrison Ford in that 1997 action film “Air Force One,” where he defeats terrorist hijackers with his brawn but not with his brains.
Liberty is more like “Air Force One” — both films use the high concept of presidents in power but neither film addresses anything insightful or perceptive about being the privileges and hassles that come along with being the top dog of a country.

Chasing Liberty is a 2004 romantic comedy directed by Andy Cadiff about the American President's daughter.
Interestingly, an early working title for Chasing Liberty was First Daughter.
Mandy Moore plays Anna Foster, the only daughter of the President of the United States who just wants a little freedom to live her life without having to be followed around by so many Secret Service agents everywhere she goes.

After an interesting performance in How to Deal, she has regressed backwards a few years to join her younger singer/actor sisters Hilary Duff and Amanda Bynes in making a Cinderella-esque story where an American girl traipses around Europe, falls in love, and tries on clothes.
Chasing Liberty is a strange choice for Moore, whose audience presumably skews a little older than Bynes and Duff, and the film offers little in terms of anything for Moore or her fans.
As a fairy tale, Chasing Liberty works to a point, but feels so removed from reality that it inspires more questions than anything else.

Chasing Liberty adds a teasing new twist to the booming genre of teen romantic fantasy that kicked off in 2001 with the G-rated hit The Princess Diaries.
Unfortunately, Chasing Liberty lacks the charm of its cinematic ancestors.
It doesn't help that the movie is about 20 minutes too long; there simply is not enough story to justify that much time, even with the added padding of a subplot about a romance between two of Anna's guardians (Jeremy Piven and Annabella Sciorra).

Slant Magazine - Film Review: Chasing Liberty
Moore's Liberty is tired of being followed by a horde of Secret Service agents, and decides to go AWOL while accompanying her father (Mark Harmon, having seemingly forgotten how to flaunt his own once-captivating smile) to a summit in Prague.
The only natural scene involves Liberty's inaugural sexual experience, which unlike Britney's deflowering in Crossroads (which felt like the product of month-long debates between Spears' myriad PR strategists) provides a refreshingly non-judgmental portrait of teenage sexuality.
Still, despite Moore's charms, Chasing Liberty's otherwise pervasive blandness leaves one with the impression that the filmmakers don't trust their female teenage audience to understand or embrace complexity or sophistication.

The 13-year old girls who will dominate the audience for "Chasing Liberty" are too young to appreciate that it's sort of a slacker version of the Audrey Hepburn classic "Roman Holiday." Instead, they will just enjoy a good wallow in adolescent dreams of romance.
They take it on the lam from Prague to Venice, with a side trip to Austria, providing breathtaking scenery as amusement for those of us bogged down by the sappy script or trivial details such as the pair crossing country borders with no passport control.
We are also saved from teenage wasteland by the engaging appearances of Jeremy Piven ("Grosse Point Blank") and Annabella Sciorra, ("Jungle Fever"), who play Secret Service partners chasing Anna and finding a more adult romance of their own.

DVD Verdict Review - Chasing Liberty
That's not a film I cared much for, and yet I do remember being struck by the sincerity with which Mandy Moore played her role -- it was the only thing that kept the film from totally collapsing under the weight of its own good intentions.
It takes a similar premise -- two young people aimlessly wandering Europe over the course of a night -- but strips it of any emotional or intellectual maturity.
And, as an insurance policy in the event that the two leads aren't interesting enough to carry the film, they are forever running in to colorful European characters -- the thrill-seeking German kleptomaniac, the overbearing Italian gondola driver, and so on.

Chasing Liberty Movie Review - Chasing Liberty Movie Trailer - The Boston Globe
There are, though, signs of life in ''Chasing Liberty.'' None of them are intelligent, but Moore is such an exuberant and feeling girl-woman that it's surprising how much you'll tolerate Andy Cadiff's zipless direction, just because the star seems happy.
Anna is tasting, um, liberty, which, if I'm reading the movie's ingredients right, is vanilla-flavored and specked with nonpareils.
''Chasing Liberty,'' while a lot less interesting and legitimately uncool, is a similar nod to junk nostalgia: It's one TV-movie romp that Kristy McNichol never got around to starring in.

Career TV director Cadiff's direction (his previous screen credit is for 1997's weird Leave it to Beaver flick) successfully makes Chasing Liberty look like that special episode of "The Facts of Life" where the girls go to Paris.
A nothing premise padded beyond recognition by a campfire scene, a bungee jumping scene, and, of course, the musical montage and winsome flashback, the picture only ever surprises by the lengths to which it goes to justify a young girl's stunningly poor judgment and unforgivable acting out as just stretching her wings.
