Situated on the banks of the Ile d'Or facing the Amboise Chateau, in the middle of the Loire at Amboise 13 miles from the centre of Tours, it is within easy reach of the biggest city in the Touraine region.
Amboise is a very pretty medieval town on the banks of the Loire and dominated by the remains of the large chateau.
The Chateau of Amboise, built by order of Charles VIII, Louis XII and François I between the 15th and 16th centuries was one of the first truly "royal" residences.

The stained glass windows in the Amboise are not original; they're modern, almost neo-Cubist panels depicting scenes from the life of Louis IX (that'd be "Saint Louis" to you and me, although he was a king, not a cardinal).

We left the Chateau de la Menaudiere with a 3 km descent (that we had climbed so arduously yesterday when we arrived), with approximately 42 km remaining and temperatures promising to be once again over 100.
The Chateau is unusual in that it spans the Cher river, with a marvelous gallery or hallway that runs the width of the river.
The entire chateau was turned into a hospital during WWI, and was a portal for safety during WWII since its north entry was in occupied territory and its south entry in the free zone.
