Chateau Latour is one of three first growth properties in Pauillac, the others being Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Chateau Lafite Rothschild.
Although it is commonly thought that Chateau Latour derives its name from the attractive tower that overlooks the vines, this is not the case.
Chateau Latour was classified as a first growth in the 1855 classification.

This vineyard has a typical Médoc topography, with a gentle rise in the ground, bounded on the north and south by two small streams, and on the east by the "Palus", the low lying meadows by the river.
Two other grape varieties, the Cabernet Franc and the Petit Verdot, make up respectively for 4% and 1% of the total planted vineyard, and are in most cases mixed in with the parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Following its sale in 1797, Chateau Lafite passed through the hands of a number of owners, but by 1818 the estate was owned by the Vanlerberghe family, although for much of this time it was managed by Sir Samuel Scott and and his son, also Samuel Scott.

Château Latour is one of Bordeaux’s and, indeed, the wine world’s most famous names.
A champion of power and structure, Latour eschews the elegance of Lafite and the aromatic complexity of Mouton and is perhaps the most consistent of the First Growths (certainly more so than Lafite or Margaux).
Impressive in its youth, Latour nevertheless packs on even more weight and complexity as the years drift by and ‘supple’ is an adjective which it never justifies.
