The king collected many works of art of the period, which are still displayed in the galleries.
To oenophiles, a chateau is a wine-making estate, which may or may not have any buildings on the grounds: while Château Margaux in the Médoc has an imposing classical house as its centrepiece, the nearby Château Léoville-Barton has no main edifice.

BBC News | From Our Own Correspondent | Kosovo peace talks: Behind the scenes
You don't have to spend very long in Rambouillet, before you realise it is the kind of sleepy French town that might once have been the backdrop for a Jacques Tati film - a quaint reminder that not everywhere in Europe has been seduced by the ugly convenience of fast food and hyper malls.
Indeed you only have to walk across the town square and peer through the railings and down into the chateau grounds - and as often as not, down by the lake, you'll see someone from either the Serb or Albanian delegation, confiding into their phones - a direct electronic leak to the press outside.
And meanwhile, the good citizens of Rambouillet, oblivious of the high stakes game being played out in their chateau, go about their business.

In Rambouillet, Serbian sources said they were ready to sign the political document on autonomy but an international military presence was unacceptable unless Yugoslavia as a sovereign state invited NATO and Russia to send troops.
The key to that question lies in Belgrade, not Rambouillet, which is why chief U.S. mediator Christopher Hill flew to the Yugoslav capital on Friday hoping that the threat of NATO air strikes would induce Milosevic to relent before Saturday's noon (1100 GMT) deadline.
Diplomats in Rambouillet say the working assumption in the air-strike strategy is that Milosevic would cave in after the first bombs fell and finally accept a NATO peacekeeping force.

This was the document that the Contact Group (the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, and Russia) tried to impose upon both the Serb and Kosovar Albanian parties that met at the Chateau Rambouillet outside Paris from Feb. 6 to 23 of this year.
They were so-called "proximity" talks in which the two parties to the conflict were kept in separate rooms from each other, with Contact Group mediators moving back and forth between the parties, thus denying them the chance to hold face-to-face negotiations of their own.
Thus throughout Rambouillet and the subsequent meetings in Paris in mid-March, the stench of NATO's cruise missiles and cluster bombs hung in the air.
