Château de Villandry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Villandry in the département of Indre-et-Loire is the lands known as Colombier until the 17th century where an ancient fortress once stood.
Acquired in the early 1500’s by Jean Le Breton, France’s Controller-General for War under King Francois I, a new château was constructed around the original 14th century keep where King Philip II of France once met with Richard I of England (“the Lionhearted”) to discuss peace.
Still owned by the Carvallo family, the Château de Villandry is open to the public and is one of the most visited castles in France.

He redesigned the interior of the chateau to meet the standards of comfort of the 18th century which are much closer to those we know today than to those, which were applied during the Renaissance.
In 1906 the chateau was bought by Dr Joachim Carvallo, who was born in Spain in 1869, and who is the great-grandfather of the present owners.

L'Atelier Vert - - Everything French Gardening®   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
Villandry is best known, at least abroad, as France's archetypal potager, a kitchen garden elevated to a regal plain and Frenchified to the maximum, with its seemingly endless geometric parterres edged in immaculately clipped boxwood.
Villandry remained in Le Breton's family until 1754, when it passed into the hands of the Marquis de Castellane, a powerful ambassador from a family of nobles from Provence.
Abandoning a brilliant scientific career to devote himself to the restoration of Villandry, it was he who recreated the gardens we view today, which are in complete harmony with the Renaissance architecture of the château and with the very spirit of the Renaissance itself.

The Château de Villandry was built in 1532, at the end of the Loire Valley’s great period of artistic and architectural expression.
Restored at the beginning of the twentieth century by Joachim Carvallo, the gardens surrounding the château are a unique example of a painstaking and documented restoration of an ornamental French-style garden of the Renaissance.
Inspired by both the monasteries’ tradition of enclosed vegetable gardens and the Italians’ love of clipped thickets, Villandry is a perfect illustration of the poet Jacques Delille’s definition: “To my eyes a garden is a vast painting.” Set out in symmetrical patterns, mixing architecture with domestic vegetation, the plants here are like decorative accessories.
