Chatelain (DE-149) was launched 21 April 1943 by Consolidated Steel Corp. of Texas, Orange, Tex.; sponsored by Mrs.
Chatelain forced the enemy submarine to the surface with two depth charge attacks, then joined in the general firing at point-blank range which followed, sending U-515 to the bottom in 34°35' N., 19°18' W.
On 4 June 1944, Chatelain had the distinction of initiating one of the most dramatic incidents of the war, when she made a sound contact, and hurled a barrage of hedgehogs at a U-boat.

Dudley S. Knox, USNR commanding, made sonar contact on an object just 800 yards away on her starboard bow.

The POPE was making its run at this time and we were preparing to make a coordinated attack as the assisting ship in accordance with F.T.P. However, the POPE at 1306 requested us to head away from the contact, “Head westward, and don’t do anything until we finish”.

So quickly was this command obeyed that scuttling measures were left incomplete and the submarines engines continued to run.The jammed rudder caused the partially-submerged U-505 to circle tothe right at a speed near seven knots.
This anti-personnel attack completely achieved its pre-conceived objective in forcing the entire enemy crew to abandon ship while inflicting relatively minor material damage on the submarine.:Completely unmindful of the dangers involved all units of the Task Group then proceeded to carry out their assigned duties in accomplishing the actual capture.

This event marked the first time a U.S. Navy vessel had captured an enemy vessel at sea since the nineteenth century.
Alerted by American cryptanalysts, who--along with the British--had been decrypting the German naval code, the Guadalcanal task group knew U-boats were operating off the African coast near Cape Verde.
The escort held her fire instead, opened range and setup a deliberate attack with her "hedgehog" (ahead-thrown depth charges which explode on contact only) battery.
