Situated between the Savannah River and the Ogeechee River, Chatham County is bordered by Effingham County, Bryan County, and the state of South Carolina.
During the Civil War (1861-65), Chatham County became an important center of trade for the Confederacy, as the multitude of creeks and rivers in the area made the total blockade of the port of Savannah difficult for the Union.
According to the U.S. census the population of Chatham County in 2000 was 232,048, with 55.3 percent white, 40.5 percent African American, and 2.3 percent Hispanic.

By 1829, the justices of Chatham County's inferior court had decided a new courthouse was needed, and in 1830 they advertised for bids.
By the 1970s, Chatham County joined a growing number of Georgia counties who found their current courthouse inadequate to serve the judicial, administrative, and legislative branches of county government -- but did not want to tear the historic building down.
In 1978, Chatham County built a new six-story courthouse/judicial center, while converting the old courthouse for use as the administrative and legislative offices.

Chatham County is a member of the regional Triangle J Council of Governments.
In the county the population was spread out with 22.50% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 30.40% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.30% who were 65 years of age or older.
Since the county is wedged between the Piedmont Triad and the Research Triangle many residents in the western portion of the county do most of their commerce in the Greensboro area, while those in the eastern portion do most of their's in the Research Triangle area.

The Chatham Record, the town's primary newspaper, was founded in 1878 by London, a prominent resident and a Democrat-Conservative (Chatham Record, 1962), and became a mouthpiece for his strong political views.
Around the same time, a Chatham Central high school yearbook picture depicting boys with nooses around their necks appeared and was not adequately dealt with by school administrators, leading to the forming of an advocacy group for minority students in county schools (Offen, 2000).
