CHATHAM - Each summer for the last 15 years, youth and adults from churches throughout New Jersey and other states have packed their tools, old cloths, and work boots and headed for a rural area in the southern tier of the Appalachian Mountains of New York.
RISE was founded in 1980 by the late Rev. Dale H. Forsman through the efforts of adults and youth in Chatham United Methodist Church and former Chatham residents Caryl and Noel Sylvester and their church in Risingville, NY.
RISE is currently managed by a volunteer Board of Directors from New Jersey and New York, which works closely with the agencies and resident of Steuben County, NY.

The true reason for the rise of Chatham as a Naval centre was the relative proximity of the place to London, and the facility of access by water.
The Naval importance of Chatham is shown by the institution of the Chatham Chest by Hawkins, Drake and others in 1590, for the relief and support for injured or disabled sailors.

The islands are located at the eastern extension of the Chatham Rise which runs due west toward New Zealand and which together with Campbell Plateau, the Lord Howe Rise, Norfolk Rise and Three Kings Rise, is considered to be part of the ancient supercontinent Gondwanaland.
Because the Chatham’s are isolated in distance and geological time from New Zealand mainland, it is not surprising that they have the highest proportion of endemic plants of any region of comparable size in New Zealand, with 40 to 45 species and varieties found nowhere else.
It is particularly difficult to assess the extent and importance of the Chathams during the second or middle period (1810 to 1835) because records are far and few between, especially for the first half of this second period.
