The appropriation will allow The Nature Conservancy to work with the U.S Forest Service to purchase tracts of land located within the Chattahoochee National Forest, particularly along Holly Creek, a critical tributary of the Conasauga River, and the Etowah River, which is located in north Georgia.
Covering nearly 500,000 acres of land -- including 119,000 acres in the Chattahoochee National Forest — the Conasauga River supports 26 species of rare fish, federally protected mussels, rare dragonflies and ranks in the top six of 2,000 watersheds in the United States in terms of natural diversity.
