Chattahoochee is bordered by the Georgia counties of Muscogee, Talbot, Marion and Stewart, and the Alabama county of Russell.
In 1918, Fort Benning was established in the western part of Chattahoochee county, and over the ensuing years, it has grown such that the military reservation today encompasses about 70% of Chattahoochee County as well as 30% of neighboring Muscogee County.
As a result, most of the Chattahoochee County land occupied by the Culpeppers in the early 20th century was taken over for military use.
