During the 1745 Jacobite Rising, Angus, the chief of Clan MacKintosh was a captain in the Black Watch.
Angus's wife, Anne, of Farquharson, successfully rallied the Chattan Confederation to the Jacobite cause.
In 1942 the leadership of Clan Chattan was passed from the Mackintosh of Mackintosh line, to the Mackintosh of Torcastle line.

The Cat, a Highland wildcat, is the beast of Clan Chattan, found in the arms of many of the chiefs and clansfolk of the confederation.
This is a "canting" charge, meaning it represents a visual pun on the name Chattan, actually derived from St. Cattan, but obviously resonant with the native feline of the Highlands, renowned for its fierce territoriality.
The use of the Cat in the Crest, atop the Helmet, is common in Clan Chattan, but it is of interest that MacGillivray arms are the only ones to use it also as a charge on the Shield, in the first quarter.

So the situation that existed within Clan Chattan in the late-1300s was that the Mackintosh, whose very name Mac-An-Toisich meant “son of the chief”, held the reigns of power within Clan Chattan while the Davidsons and MacPhersons vied for that power.

The tradition of the Mackintoshes and Shaws is "unvaried", says the Rev. W G Shaw of Forfar, that at least from and after 1396, a race of Shaws existed in Rothiemurchus, whose great progenitor was the Shaw Mor who commanded the section of the clan represented by the Mackintoshes on the Inch.
