He met Yehudi Menuhin at a recital in Delhi '52 which was Menuhin's baptism in the waters of Hindustani music, and where he also met Ravi Shankar and Chatur Lal.
Shankar was supposed to go to America '55 but could not; his brother-in-law took his place: championed by Menuhin, Khan gave the first major recital of Hindustani music in the USA, performing at the Museum of Modern Art, making a TV appearance on Alistair Cooke's Omnibus.
Khan contributed to the soundtrack of Satyajit Ray's film Devi '60, one of the first non-Western directors to breach the international film barrier; during that decade Khan was second only to Shankar in Indian fame on the international circuit.

South Extension-based Pandit Chatur Lal Memorial Society is dishing out a rare treat in Indian classical music with two legendary artistes, Ustad Bismillah Khan and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, performing together in a concert, titled ‘Amar Jyoti’, at Talkatora Stadium on August 18.
The Pandit Chatur Lal Memorial Society was founded in 1990 by the son of the great tabla wizard Pandit Chatur Lal, Pandit Charanjit Chatur Lal, to revive his memory.
The main objective of the society is to propagate solo tabla performances, organise concerts to provide opportunities to young and upcoming artistes to display their talents and perpetuate the memory of late Pandit Chatur Lal through the creation of a huge music library.
