Ping Chau is the proper name of the island, but because of the possible confusion with another Hong Kong island Peng Chau in Cantonese language, Tung (東, meaning east) is often prepended to the proper name.
Geographically, Ping Chau is located in the northeast corner of Hong Kong in Mirs Bay and near the border to mainland China.

The area covers the whole of Tsing Chau Tsai Peninsula including Penny's Bay, To Kau Wan, Tsing Chau Wan, Ta Shui Wan, part of Yam O Wan, Cheung Sok Island and the future reclamation areas along the southern, northern and eastern coasts in North-East Lantau.
A water recreation centre (about 32 hectares) to the north-west of the theme park, with a large artificial lake and recreational facilities, is proposed to serve the irrigation purposes for the theme park and to provide for public water recreation uses.
The proposed reclamation areas to the east of the theme park, in Yam O and in Ngam Hau Shek east of Tsing Chau Tsai Peninsula are zoned "Undetermined" covering about 218 hectares and pending further detailed studies to determine future uses compatible to the tourism and recreation theme.

With an area of about 1,667 hectares, the Planning Scheme Area of the North-East Lantau OZP covers the whole of Tsing Chau Tsai Peninsula including Penny's Bay, To Kau Wan, Tsing Chau Wan, Ta Shui Wan, part of Yam O Wan and Cheung Sok Island.
About 1.3 hectares of land at Kau Yi Chau is zoned "Open Space" and reserved for the development of an open space to serve the future workers in the container terminals.
Some 21 hectares of land is zoned "Conservation Area" to conserve the existing landscape and character of Kau Yi Chau and to protect the area from encroachment by the adjacent development.

The Temple was originally a stone tablet erected on the north shore of Yuen Chau Tsai by villagers of the Chik Mei Village located north of the Shenzhen River.
In 1988, a ceremony was held to mark the reopening of the Tai Wong Yeh Temple after its renovation.

Five red tides were sighted in Hong Kong waters during the past few days, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (February 4).
Staff of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) observed a red tide at Tolo Harbour near Yuen Chau Tsai on January 28 and another at Cheung Sha Wan Fish Culture Zone on January 30.
The red tide at Hap Mun Bay Beach dissipated on January 31 and the one at Chek Lap Kok and Sha Chau dissipated on February 2.

Visitors may go to Tung Ping Chau by taking a ferry from the Ma Liu Shui pier between Tai Po and Sha Tin.
When it was first organised by the Tai Po Seven Districts Sports Association in 1972, the race started at the Yue Tung Shuen Villa in Sam Mun Tsai and finished in the waters around Yuen Chau Tsai.
In the early 1980s, the Tai Po Sports Association took over the organisation and altered the 2,400-metre route to start at Sha Lan in Shuen Wan and end at the Tai Mei Tuk Water Sports Centre to avoid reclamation works.

Located at the Island House Interchange, the Tai Wong Yeh Temple at Yuen Chau Tsai has a long history dating back to the mid-Qing Dynasty when villagers in Chik Mei north of the Shum Chun River erected a stone tablet on the northern shore of Yuen Chau Tsai.
In the late Qing Dynasty, a group of fishermen raised funds to build the Tai Wong Yeh Temple for worship by local fishermen at the present location.
An opening ceremony of the Tai Wong Yeh Temple was held in 1988 to mark its renovation.
