The Siege of Chaves refers to the French siege of Chaves, Portugal in 1808 and the subsequent recapture of the town by Portuguese forces.
Portugal suffered several invasions by French forces during the turbulent period of the Peninsular War.
Moore's army was defeated and hounded across the mountains of Lugo; the English general himself was killed during the final combats carried out around the bay of Coruña, where the remnants of his forces re-embarked.

Chaves became one of the northern-most outposts of the Moorish empire until the Portuguese expelled the Moors and took control of the city in 1160.

In 1986, Chaves moved up to Formula Ford 1600, and he walked off with both the Portuguese and Iberian championships, as well as victories in the rest of continental Europe, and in England.
Chaves carried that form into four rounds of the International F3000 championship with his Mansell Madgwick car, finishing 4th at Brands Hatch.
Chaves had been so impressive in 2000 that he represented Portugal in the traditional end-of-year Race of Champions event in the Canary Islands, where he was far from disgraced, even if he was knocked out in the sudden-death format before the final stages.

During the time of its occupation by the Romans, the city of Chaves was known by the name of "Aquae Flaviae", given to it by the Emperor Titus Flavius Vespasianus (Vespasian), who recognised the excellent quality of the thermal springs located here.
The healing properties of these waters, the warmest in Europe with a temperature of roughly 73º C at their source, are still greatly appreciated and the spa is an extremely popular one.
Chaves is also famous for its richly varied cuisine, and particularly for its sausages and smoked ham.

The old-world little town of Chaves, the Roman Aquae Flaviae, lies on a plateau in northern Portugal near the Spanish frontier, in an area watered by the Rio Tâmega which has been intensively cultivated since ancient times.
