Cheapass Games - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cheapass Games is a game company founded and run by former Wizards of the Coast game designer James Ernest.
Cheapass Games operates on the philosophy that most game owners have plenty of dice, counters, play money, etc., so there is no need to bundle all of these components with every game that requires them.
Cheapass Games thus come with the absolute minimum components necessary to play the game - a typical Cheapass board game may include a rules sheet and a printed playing board.

Game Review - Button Men by James Ernest
In fact the game is so simple, most players are going to play and say "Is that it?" However, after playing the game many, many times, I feel the main idea of the game is so simple and original that I would compare the game to a beautiful 1/4 carat diamond.
This is one of the the strategies in the game: do you select a 20 sided die in an attempt to clobber your opponent, or do you select a 4 sided die to help build some speed attacks.
It is also the sort of game that can be carried in a dice bag or stowed away in the corner of a game box.

Before I Kill You Mr. Bond - Cheapass Games
Cheapass Games is a company with the idea that games should not be expensive.
The game is based on the idea that all super-villains in Bond movies don’t just kill the spy when they capture him, they torture him and tell him their life stories first.
I really enjoyed this game and would recommend it to those who want a quick game that does not take a lot of time to set up or play to add to their game collection, and especially to those who always wanted to be the villain in a James Bond movie...

 Deadwood - Cheapass Games
Deadwood is a board game from our friends over at Cheapass Games that captures this struggle to make it to the big time.
It's a game that can be enjoyed by seasoned gamers for it's entertainment value, and with family gamers for the very same reason.
See, Cheapass' founder James Ernest found one day that the cost for some games were just a little bit high for his tastes.

 Bernie DeKoven's FunLog: Cheapass Games
Cheapass Games is one of a very few commercial game companies with a real sense of the funniness of fun.
Their games tend to be light-hearted, often silly, and yet always playworthy, genuinely well-designed.
There are also some free games (well, game rules and instructions on how to make them) on their site.

Cheapass Games are a small company that produce incredibly cheap games, often in envelopes, simple white boxes or resealable 'ziplock' bags.
Player interaction is always high, as each round has an auction in which players bid on cities to be added to their little empire, as well as the fact that during the expanding of territories, players often have to fight over farms (the source of food) and gold mines (fairly obviously, the source of gold).
The game is hugely enjoyable, with many different and equally effective ways of playing, and as is usual with Cheapass Games the rules are clear, concise and very easy to digest.

 Games about Balloon Aviation
The game is rated for ages 7 and up and illustrated accordingly with a dazzling series of colorful images which are particular to the folklore each locale.
This game breaks with its predecessors by abandoning the idea of competing balloons and instead puts all of the players into the same basket, one which is climbing through the clouds.
Their games were known for their vivid color, detailed illustrations and contemporary themes, of which this game, made to tie-in with the then new transatlantic dirigible service, is an example.

Fair Play Games - Light Speed - Board Games and Card Games - Cheapass Games - James Ernest   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
We have an interesting situation with a game right now: One of my regular playtesters came to a playtest with a preconceived notion of what the new game would be like, and although it's turning into a pretty solid game, he'll never like it because it's not the game he would have written.
But these games only get played when there is a lull in my own design schedule, a time when there isn't a playable new game on a given Wednesday night.
Cheapass is releasing a One False Step expansion, One False Step Home, and The Big Idea (Semideluxe edition) in August, then The Totally Renamed Spy Game in October, and Jacob Marley, Esquire (a banking game) in November.

Another great game from Cheapass Games is Lord of the Fries.
This game is a sequel to Give Me the Brain, with the setting of Friedays restaurant - starring the zombies.

The Very Clever Pipe Game Review
Cheapass Games have been something of a hit or miss with many gamers.
The game consists of 48 thin tiles (the original version had 120 tiles but you only played with 40 at a time.) with fl and white pictures showing a network of pipes.
I've played a few games that were decided by the fact that one player drew so many more tiles with caps than the other player.

mattandjess.net - as you wish: Make it a Cheapass night!
A very small company called Cheapass Games noticed two observations about board games, as noted on their website: They a lot of money, and are the same in most ways, except for the board.
In their words, a board game usually consists of a board, instructions, and then the remaining parts such as dice, timers, counters, markers, and pencils can account for about 75% of the remaining cost of production which gets passed on to us, the consumers.
In addition, the primary game creator over at Cheapass Games, James Ernest, is proving to be a brilliant mind in game design.

Strange Adventures in Infinite Space by Cheapass Games & Digital Eel - A Game Monkeys Review!
The simple, unpretentious style of the game is rather pleasing and comfortable, and sets the proper tone for the game.
This is all in keeping with the Cheapass Games philosophy--their board games come without pieces in order to lower the cost to the buyer, whereas Strange Adventures goes low key on the graphics and cuts out a significant part of their budget without producing an ugly or unpleasant game.
On the galactic map, you simply click on a star you wish to explore and go there, taking time to travel based on the speed of your drive (which is deducted from the time you have to complete the mission--going over that time reduces your score, and we'll discuss that more in a moment).

 : RevolutionSF - U.S. Patent Number 1 : Review
Cheapass Games became famous within minutes of inception for a string of clever, quirky board and card games that are inexpensive and fun.
It's a game for 3 to 6 players, and by the time the other 2 to 5 of them have figured out how the board fits together, you'll have skimmed the rules and can start explaining it to them.
And like most Cheapass games, the game is a little weird, but not so weird that you couldn't play with your parents or non-gamer S.O. Patent is not the very best game Cheapass has ever produced, but it's plenty fun and you'll play it more than once.

Infinity Games UK Blog: Spree! Review by Zombiemonkey
If you’re not familiar with Cheapass Games, they are basically a small publisher that release inexpensive games which come with boards and cards for a minimal price, but players must provide their own ‘generic’ pieces (so any tokens or dice as needed).
Surprisingly fun with a very slight tactical element, Spree does lack the complexity of the latest Cheapass games, not to mention the sense of humour (at least during the game), but is a fast paced and pleasant diversion nonetheless.
Spree is a short, simple and most importantly fun game that has just the right balance of luck and skill, and stands out as one of the most satisfying Cheapass games.

As you may have guessed from the company's name, KDL and the other games from Cheapass, are not available in the deluxe mahogany and gold-plated edition.
The premise of KDL is deliciously evil and turns the game of Clue on its head: this is a pre-mystery game in which the object is not to discover who committed the murder, but rather to succeed in committing the murder (I did warn you that you might not consider this appropriate for the kids).
Whether or not the game's theme is sufficiently appropriate is left as an exercise for the individual parent.

 Cheapass Games - About Us
We here at Cheapass Games are aware of two basic facts about games: they cost too much, and they are at some level all the same.
And it's probably something you can scrounge from a game you already own, or buy at a hobby store for less than "they" are charging you for it.

Kill Doctor Lucky and Before I Kill You, Mr Bond...
The games come in paper envelopes, which are difficult to open without tearing, and represent a bargain at less than $10 each.
When one establishes that the games are, respectively, a species of prequel to Cluedo and a chance to finish off James Bond once and for all before his inevitable miracle escape, there is clearly no shortage of odd themes originating in the Pacific Northwest.
The entire game thus revolves around the quest to murder J Robert Lucky, and whatever your motive may be, everyone else present has the same idea.

US Patent No. 1 by Cheapass Games - A Game Monkeys Review!
The Hype: Cheapass is the company that has made a name for itself by bringing incredibly clever little low price point games to market- primarily because they sacrifice some of the aesthetic appeal of the games they make and don't include any dice, counters, or other such frivolity.
They're latest game, US Patent No. 1, pits you as the inventor of a time machine who must race with other inventors of similar time machines back to the US Patent office in 1790 to be the first in line.
For example, if you don't have anything better to do, or need the money, take the time to screw the people native to the era with your almost magical knowledge of things to come (in our games, that was almost always betting on celebrity deaths and assassinations).
