The Cheat River Grade is located between Blaser, West Virginia, and the west end of the Cheat River bridge in Rowlesburg, WV, with a ruling grade of 2.10 % against westbound trains descending Laurel Mountain.
The Cheat River grade was originally double tracked in 1888 and remained so for the next one hundred years until 1989 when a major derailment occurred.
Following the washout of the Cheat River bridge in 1985 and the reduction of the line across the river to a single track, a switch was installed between 76 Fill and Rowlesburg which served as the western end of the single mainline from MandK Junction.

The Cheat River is formed by the confluence of Black and Shavers Forks at Parsons, WV, and flows north through north central WV for 120 km.
Our specific objectives were: 1) to quantify the ecological condition of the Cheat River using the WVSCI, a family-level multimetric index of biotic integrity, and 2) to assess the relative importance of AMD and thermal effluent as environmental stressors to the river.
The Cheat River remains severely impaired because of thermal effects but is improving 3 km downstream until additional AMD delivered from Muddy Creek and Greens Run further impairs the river.
