There are apparently two roads to Moscow, one that goes through Cheboksary and one that goes south of it.
Cheboksary has a nice waterfront along the Volga River and the people I met were proud of the title of the cleanest city in Russia, awarded last year.
The city is clean and well kept, but like everywhere else in Russia, litter lines the side of the roads and the clean areas seem confined to the center of the city.

A new source of diamonds could soon be unearthed in central Russia thanks to a novel isotope-hydrogeochemical technique developed by scientists at the Research Institute of Geological and Geoecological Problems, in Cheboksary, 400 miles east of Moscow in the Volga-Vyatka region.

The technique works on the basis that kimberlitic pipes always coincide with subterranean waters in which the ratio of uranium isotopes is strictly fixed, while the content of zinc, lead, aluminium, and zircon is increased.
