Cheboygan is located approximately 16 miles southeast along the coast of Lake Huron from the Mackinac Bridge.
Situated at the mouth of the Cheboygan River, it is the gateway to an inland chain of lakes.
The name Cheboygan stands for "Water of the Chippewas." The first settler was Jacob Sammons, a cooper from Mackinaw City who built a log cabin there in 1844 to further his business, and thus founded a town.

The construction contract was awarded to Rhodes and Warner, of Ohio, and under the superintendence of Captain Shook of the Army Corps of Engineers, construction of the station began in the spring of 1851.
This was the time of peak production for Cheboygan's lumber industry, with the area's eight mills producing over 100 million board feet of lumber, of which the Duncan Mill produced 27.5 million feet alone.
With the construction of the Fourteen Foot Shoal Light offshore in the Straits in 1930, Cheboygan Main was considered obsolete, locked-up and abandoned.

 Street & Road Numbering Ordinance - Cheboygan County, Michigan
The Board of Commissioners of the County of Cheboygan has determined that the health, safety and welfare of the inhabitants of the County would be better served by a County Ordinance establishing a county-wide street and road numbering system.
The purpose of this ordinance is to establish, with the exception of the City of Cheboygan and the Village of Mackinaw City, a county-wide street and road numbering system in a uniform logical manner; to provide for a central point to issue and control numbering; and to provide rules and guidelines to facilitate enforcement thereof.
The Cheboygan County Street and Road Numbering Ordinance enacted in May, 1995, as amended, is hereby repealed in its entirety.

With a population of approximately 800 in 1870, and a growing number of mills along the shores of the Cheboygan River, the Army Corps of Engineers conducted their first survey of the Cheboygan River in 1870 to evaluate the possibility of improving navigation within the river.
We visited the Cheboygan Public Library to see if they had any historical information on any of Cheboygan's three lighthouses, but were disappointed to find very little information.
We then went to the Cheboygan Historical Museum, but found that it was not scheduled to open for the season until June.
