In the county the population was spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 6.20% from 18 to 24, 25.80% from 25 to 44, 26.30% from 45 to 64, and 17.90% who were 65 years of age or older.
The county government operates the jail, maintains rural roads, operates the major local courts, keeps files of deeds and mortgages, maintains vital records, administers public health regulations, and participates with the state in the provision of welfare and other social services.

The first formal meeting of the Cheboygan Area Historical Society was held in the library of the Cheboygan Junior High Building, May 6, 1969.
A short time thereafter, the old Cheboygan County jail and attached Sheriff's home were acquired.
The acquisition of the jail and house developed into an ideal museum where exhibits could be set up in the jail cells and the home could be furnished as an early 1900's home.
