 Nature preserve grows
CHEBOYGAN - About two miles of rocky shoreline east of Cheboygan State Park will be kept as a nature preserve for the endangered plants and animals that thrive there.
The rocky beaches along Lake Huron are critical habitat for the federally protected piping plover and bald eagle, as well as several endangered plants like the Pitcher's thistle, Houghton's goldenrod and Michigan's state wildflower, the dwarf lake iris.
Many campers at nearby Cheboygan State Park ask about the preserve, park supervisor Paul Koszegi said, and often stroll down the beach to see the ecological treasure.

The Cheboygan County Road Commission was awarded $18,750, and the Bay Area Transit Authority, $11,250.
Both organizations sought the biodiesel incentive funds to be able to use a renewable fuel that reduces the impact of transportation on the environment.
Many fleets have successfully moved to B20 (a mix of 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent diesel), which is accepted by most engine manufacturers.

The state pulled the plug on Toughman amateur boxing, a fair staple for 14 years, because the promoter did not provide full medical insurance for fighters as required.
Dean Oswold, a former partner of Toughman founder Art Dore, promoted the Cheboygan Toughman contests.
