Russian Cartoonists Mad Over Olympic Mascot - NEWS - MOSNEWS.COM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Writer Eduard Uspensky, who had penned the story that served as the basis for the cartoon and holds the copyright, has given the Olympic Committee the right to use the character.
Before Shvartsman drew his Cheburashka, book illustrations of the character were quite different and bear next to no resemblance to the image that millions of Russians recognize and that has gathered a cult following in Japan.
The cartoonists who wrote to the Olympic Committee call for organizations and private persons in Russia and abroad to “exercise caution” in dealing with Uspensky and believe that the writer insulted Shvartsman and all Russian cartoonists by handing the popular image to the Committee to be used as a mascot without consulting its author.
