Check-raise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A check-raise in poker is a common deceptive play in which a player checks early in a betting round, hoping someone else will open.
The player who checked then raises in the same round.
This might be done, for example, when the first player believes that an opponent has an inferior hand and will not call a direct bet, but that he may attempt to bluff, allowing the first player to win more money than he would by betting straightforwardly.

 Theory of Poker Excerpt
Sometimes you can check raise with a come hand like a four flush if there are many people in the pot already and you don't expect a reraise, for you are getting good enough odds, especially if you have a couple of cards to come.
Check raising is checking your hand with the intention of raising on the same round after an opponent bets.
Check raising and slowplaying are two ways of playing a strong hand weakly to trap your opponents and win more money from them.

Sandbagging (poker) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This might involve a check or call with a hand that you might otherwise raise with, to lure other players into the pot who might fold to a raise, or to lure them into betting more strongly than they would if you had bet or raised.
This is often dangerous because it sacrifices the protection that a bet or raise would give you, and it also risks losing the pot-building value of a bet if your opponents also check.
This play is best when there are several players behind you, and they are the kind of player likely to call one bet but not a raise.

Poker Strategy: Stud Poker Strategy: Check Raising, part two.
If, for example, you check raise a bettor who is right in front of you, then the other players in the game have already called his bet before your raise - making it likely that they will call your raise as well.
If you did check, with the intention of check raising, and Sam bet, then Hoy and Moty would be likely to call Sam's initial bet and your raise.
If Sam the raiser is to your right, however, there's no reason to check-raise, since your raise will likely knock out the other players and you'll be playing heads up.

UPF - Check-Raising in No Limit
Typically a check raise is to get more into the pot and flush out some weaker player who have already called.
I do not think this is the answer to your question, but I think since in limit you have the max bet limitation, the check raise can maximize your winnings if you have a great hand, the nut or a good bluff.
I no limit if you check raise, that person can come over the top of you and essentially make you fold if the bet it too great for your cards.

 GameMaster's Poker School - Lesson 16
As you undoubtedly know, the vast majority of the time the other players will check to the raiser - it's done so often that the saying is a part of poker lore.
You raised, which indicates a "big" hand and if you can somehow convince your opponent that you hold a hand that can beat a pair of Aces, you can likely make him or her fold.
If you have raised, a lot of what will happen on the flop really depends upon what position you're in; a raise from under-the-gun (UTG) is usually perceived as being stronger than one from the Button, for example.

Free Raising And Marketing Exotic Animals For Profit
Exotic animals are raised for many different reasons -- as pets, for their fur, wool, or feathers or food, as oddities for special purposes or many combinations thereof.
Which animals you raise will of course be influenced by your own preferences, the facilities you can provide, where you live, and of course the market in your area.
When you have decided upon the animals you plan to raise, and have learned of their care and habits, its is time to start building pens, sheds and feeding areas.

 The Check-Raise Bluff
For example, if players are calling or raising with hands such as K-Q, small pairs, or weak aces (which is quite common in most $15-$30 and $20-$40 games, based on my observation), they will be hard-pressed to call a check-raise, even when they might hold a pair.
Finally, if the check-raise bluff fails and you are forced to show the bluff, you will probably have to readjust your thinking at the table and play a very solid (unimaginative) game from that point on.
Since your raise might convince an opponent that you have the straight (or even a set or two pair), he very well may throw his hand away.

 Poker Tutorial: Quiz
By raising on the flop you're basically announcing that you've flopped big; this makes it less likely that someone will 'make a play' at you on the turn (by check raising you, or by lead betting) if a scare card comes, since they'll figure you're going to the river with your big hand anyway.
Notice that if the pre-flop raiser raises your bet (and he will raise if he has an overpair), the rest of the field is going to be looking at calling two bets cold.
If you call the flop, then lead bet the turn, the pre-flop raiser may just call your turn bet with a hand as big as an overpair, since he may be afraid that you've slowplayed a monster (which in fact you have).

 Texas Holdem
A passive player frequently checks and calls or checks and folds after the flop and does not push the betting with an advantage; conversely, an aggressive player often raises for a variety of reasons after the flop with an advantage.
A tight player plays premium hands, has high standards for calling raises; conversely, a loose player often limps in (calls before the flop without raising) and cold-calls (calling a raise without raising) more often than is correct.
If they think are you a tight player, they will be less inclined to call your raises; if they think you are an overly-aggressive player who frequently raises with marginal hands, they will be more inclined to call.

 Crushing the Microlimits: The Check-raise Part I - Poker Tips - PokerFaces.Net
While the idea of using the check raise to knock players out usually applies to those situations where you expect the bet to come from your right, this second concept applies to hands where the bet will likely come from your left.
Secondly, the check raise is often the best way to get more money into the pot when you have an unusual amount of pot equity.
In a hand like this, where you have top pair in a big pot and a fairly coordinated board, you are almost always better off going for a check raise as opposed to betting out.

Since a raise by the pre-flop raiser won’t knock anyone out, you decide to go for a check raise, and hopefully trap the field for multiple bets.
So, you bet out, and if the pre-flop raiser makes it two bets you take the good with the bad—some hands fold that you’re glad are out, and some hands fold that you wish had stayed in.
But if you do that, the pre-flop raiser will probably just call with his likely overpair on the turn, which means the field will get to look at the river for one big bet.
