Originally, a CheckerCab was a taxi produced by the CheckerCab Manufacturing Company (later known as Checker Motors Corporation) of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and operating under the name "CheckerCabs" in New York and other American cities.
CheckerCabs were best known for their yellow livery, the fl-and-white checkerboard-pattern stripes that ran down their sides, and their roomy interiors, which in addition to the usual back seat, included small collapsible seats immediately behind the front seats to accommodate extra passengers.
Checker Motors today operates as an automotive subcontractor, primarily for General Motors, building mostly body components.
Set in the fictional "Sunshine Cab Company" headquarters in New York City, all or most of the cabs in the Sunshine fleet were Checkers.
Nearly every episode began with footage of Checkers in action, and the background of the garage interior often showed several Checkers getting worked on or waiting to be dispatched.
The Last CheckerCab was retired from NYC's taxi fleet in 1999.

Checker was having difficulty with finding cars that could survive taxi abuse, and in 1920 decided to try cars that used the Commonwealth chassis, but had bodies supplied by the Markin Auto Body Corporation, also of Joliet.
Checker's standard equipment at the time was a six-cylinder 226 Continental engine producing 89 horsepower with a three-speed standard transmission, which these large, heavy cars continued to use, making them too slow for American roads, but fine for the mid-east.
Checker's first attempt at marketing to the general public took place in 1931 when a vehicle called the Utility was introduced on the Model M chassis.
