Checker Taxi (Checker Cab) was a taxi produced by the Checker Motors Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Checker Taxis were used by its founder Morris Markin in the taxi service that he owned and operated under the name Parmalee System.
In the original Mission Impossible television show, episodes that were supposedly set in Eastern Europe often used Checkers as vehicles, as was sometimes evident in closeups of the cars.

In 1983, Checker introduced the first computerized dispatch center in Calgary, and it was revamped last year to allow for the increase in the number of calls and cabs currently averaging 35,000 calls a week.

The very last licensed Checker taxi in Manhattan was pulled from service in August 1999 and in December that same year was sold at auction at Sothebys.
A look back sadly reveals how Checker began a long, steady decline in the early-70's, largely due to increased competition for fleet sales from the major Detroit automakers who needed this important outlet when passenger-car sales slowed during the oil embargo.
Checker Motors Corporation of Kalamazoo, MI kept this styling largely unchanged from 1982 all the way back to 1959.

Hertz began painting the taxis yellow to attract the attention of would-be riders.
The new majority owners of Yellow Cab, a partnership led by Russian-born Morris Markin, also owned Checker Taxi; its parent company, Checker Cab Manufacturing Co. of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and numerous smaller taxi companies in New York City, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh.
At the beginning of the 1960s, when it had about 3,000 employees and $16 million in annual revenues, Chicago Yellow Cab was formally merged into the Checker Motors Corp. During the middle and late 1990s, Yellow Cab changed hands several times and effectively ended its legal relationship with Checker.

I am the owner of a 1978 Checker Marathon A-11, which I purchased for $1900 in the summer of 1997.
Some are of people associated with Checkers, and others are of odds and ends related only peripherally to Checkers, but they all have SOMETHING to do with the darn things.
Walthers is selling an inexpensive resin model of a 1959 Checker Marathon (actually, some of the details are wrong) and they include a photograph of the thing.
