Barbs, danios and rasboras are among the most commonly kept and best-known cyprinid species.
Barbs are predominantly small to medium sized fish with a typical diamond-shape, compressed laterally.
Barbs are egg scatterers that do not tend their eggs or fry and so a separate spawning/fry tank is needed.

The Checker Barbs' spawning habit is egg scattering, so when I set up a 10 gallon tank I laid a spawning grid along the bottom to separate the eggs from the parents.

Extremely active, barbs, especially Tiger Barbs [see photo], have gained notoriety for terrorizing fellow community members and jumping out of the tank during a feeding frenzy.
Barbs are also true schooling fishes, feeling insecure and unhappy when alone.
Swimming about as tightly formed schools, barbs prefer open spaces; a large tank without too much vegetation is the best habitat for them.
