OYL Me Up: Checkmate & Blue Beetle - Shiny Shelf   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
‘Checkmate’ was a 1980s superhero espionage book, and Greg Rucka’s revival is pretty much exactly what you’d expect from both his recent superhero scripts and the general tenor of the ‘Infinite Crisis’ era: a combination of superhero nonsense and eyebrow-lifting brutalism, with ambiguous (and at best semi-thought-through) parallels to real-world politics.
The Checkmate hierarchy now includes Amanda Waller (wasn’t she a bad guy?) and flouncy purple-cloaked Green Lantern Alan Scott, who now inexplicably dresses as a pirate.
By all means, superhero comics should feel unrestrained in ignoring reality, but if they do they should try not to act like they’re making a ‘West Wing’ style political drama.

Checkmate #1 Review - Silver Bullet Comics
Rucka revived Checkmate seemingly on a whim four years ago at the end of his run on Detective Comics, and he promptly sent his creation Sasha Bordeaux packing with them.
Checkmate has less in common with GC than it does with Queen and Country or Suicide Squad, but an international covert ops intelligence agency set in the heart of the DCU is a formula for an insane number of potentially amazing stories.
In addition to the global power struggle, the internal politics and factions of the Checkmate members is rather compelling, utilizing the chess iconography and pulling it off with a straight face.

Everybody in Checkmate has got a different agenda, so, ostensibly, the excuse for going to the facility in Hebei is to say, 'Okay, Kobra got a hold of a quantity of cyclosarin that was used in an attempted terrorist incident during the missing year.

It’s easy to write Checkmate off as “Queen and Country with superheroes.” On the surface of Checkmate, writer Greg Rucka appears to be dealing in the same espionage circles of Queen and Country.
Waller is all about control and when she wasn’t allowed involvement in fl ops, she fell back on her old ways and re-established the Suicide Squad, a covert team that recruits criminals with the promise of eventual amnesty.
With Waller present in Checkmate, the connection between the two teams is logical and actually expected but Rucka has barely reestablished this new Checkmate before working to reestablish another older concept.

The problem lies in the fact that the main characters all have two names, and as the reader’ s trying to make his or her way through that maze of information, the complex mix of politics and espionage in the UN scenes is in danger of being lost completely.
The newly formed Checkmate agency — designed to be an international intelligence agency monitoring and policing metahuman affairs — faces a pivotal vote before the UN Security Council.
On the line is the financial and political support Checkmate needs to survive and thrive, but the Black Queen, Amanda Waller, and the White King, Alan Scott, discover the French are trying to block that support.

Now that the debris is beginning to settle, Greg Rucka sat down with a coffee and a smoke to tell CBR News where he is now and where he might be going in the future.
While “Checkmate” is more grounded than either “JL Elite” or “The Authority,” Rucka still acknowledges its roots in the fantastic.
He went on to say, “I think they understand that the most crucial thing in doing an adaptation like this is getting the characters right and to try to translate the character as honestly as possible.” However, Rucka does not consider himself right for that job.
