American Whitewater - River Reach #2081
The river forms at the confluence of the west and east forks, and from this point to the first bridge downstream the river flows at a lazy pace through continuous class II rapids.
The Chehalis is a little off the beaten path as one of the few whitewater runs in the southwest corner of the state, but it serves up some great whitewater for a wide range of interests.
As you drive the shuttle, avoid roads that turn away from the river and stay on the main line that parrallels the river and allows you to road scout nearly the entire run.

The Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis
The Upper Chehalis inhabited the territory from Cloquallum Creek to the upper reaches of the Chehalis River.
The name "Chehalis" (meaning "sand") originally referred to a village near the present-day town of Westport and later came to be applied to the river and to the people living upriver.
At one time there were many villages in the Upper Chehalis region, principal ones being located at the mouths of rivers and creeks.

The Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis
The Chehalis remained with the rivers to a greater degree and developed a trading route that went from the Cowlitz River system to the Chehalis river system.
Although the Native American population in Lewis County is hard to determine, one report indicates that a gathering of the Upper Chehalis tribe at Ford's Prairie in 1855 was 5,000 strong.
Both tribes were river-dependent; that is, they relied upon the rivers for the mainstay of their diet: salmon.

CHEHALIS RIVER SALMON AND TROUT ENHANCEMENT FACILITY AND FISHING REPORT
Chehalis River Hatchery is a salmonid enhancement facility operated by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (Government of Canada) near Harrison Mills in the province of British Columbia in Canada.
The juvenile fish are reared for two months to one year (depending on the species) at the hatchery and then released into the Chehalis River and the Harrison River.
Those that have not been caught in various commercial and sport fisheries then return to the Chehalis River, the Harrison River, and the hatchery to spawn.

At the Chehalis River treaty council there were representatives from the Quinault and Queets, from the north side of Gray's Harbor, from the Satsop, from the Lower Chehalis, Upper Chehalis, Shoalwater Bay, Chinook, and Cowlitz.
Following the record of the Chehalis River council and treaty, there is a facsimile copy of the treaty negotiated in July 1855 on the Quinault River.
Ironically, the issues which Stevens refused to negotiate at the Chehalis River council and which caused the Cowlitz, Chinook, Chehalis and Shoalwater Bay Indians not to sign the Chehalis River treaty, were conceded in the Treaty of Olympia and by later Executive Orders.

ESPN Outdoors -- Border crossing equals world-class steelies
This is actually one river with two names: it's the Chilliwack from the headwaters at Chilliwack Lake to Vedder Crossing, and the Vedder from there to the Vedder Canal, which eventually empties into the Fraser.
It certainly isn't distance, because several B.C. steelhead rivers lie as close to the Seattle metro area as most Columbia River tribs, and are easier to reach than the streams on the Olympic Peninsula.
And while the Chehalis' bank access is miniscule compared to the Vedder's, this drainage is often fishable when the Vedder is blown out.

Upper Chehalis River Dry Season Total Maximum Daily Load Study
The Chehalis River and tributaries were evaluated for loading sources and other physical, chemical, and biological river conditions that contribute to the oxygen deficit.
Past studies have documented areas of low dissolved oxygen (D.O.) during the summer in the "Centralia reach" of the Chehalis River (between the Newaukum and Skookumchuck Rivers).
Additional studies are recommended for the following: eutrophication in the mainstem Chehalis River and Scatter Creek, ground water interactions, and sediment oxygen demand.

Best Waterfalls of the Northwest Waterfalls of the Pacific Northwest
The Snake River is one of the largest rivers in the country, and not only does it have 212 foot Shoshone Falls (50 feet taller than Niagara Falls), it's also got 7 other waterfalls in Idaho (130 foot Twin Falls is the only significant one however).
Tapped for power in the late 1800's, the volume of the Snoqualmie River remains relatively consistent through the dry periods of the year, but during the snow melt seasons the 268 foot falls become one of the most powerful waterfalls in the country.
However, being situated in the arid southern part of Idaho, the Snake River is diverted upstream from the falls for irrigation, and during the late summer, it's not uncommon for Shoshone Falls to go completely dry.

The Seattle Times: Local News: Chehalis birthday fete evolved into an unofficial annual event
She reminisced with her friends, all longtime participants or observers of the River Run, about a woman who one year rode the river with her shotgun, taking "pot shots" at the woods and at people who were throwing things from the bridges.
John Hagerty of Chehalis, in his rubber raft, was the first over the falls this year.
Spectators, and there are plenty including a few dozen at the park at the end of the run, watch the boats pass from the two or three bridges spanning the eight miles of river between Pe Ell and Rainbow Falls.

how to fish the Chehalis river
The river needs to raise about 1 to 2 feet from the normal fall low to trigger the fish to move upstream.
The bulk of the fishermen on the river will usually be spoon / spinner fishermen, as they can fish about anywhere and without much special knowledge of the river or how to read the water.
Stream flow info can be gotten off the internet USGS address of http://wwwdwatcm.wr.usgs.gov/rt-cgi/gen_tbl_pg A good time to fish using KwikFish is when we get a little rain and the stream flow at Porter, (which is slightly upriver) reaches 2000 to 2700 CFS with a height of 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 feet.

Mrs. Boyer's 5th Grade Class -- Chehalis Basin Project
Each year we ask ourselves the question, “How do we affect the health of the Chehalis River watershed and the osprey?” Working to answer that question, the class studies watersheds, water quality, soil, riparian zones (the land near rivers), benthic macro invertebrates (stream bugs), salmon and ospreys.
Boyer’s class has been studying the Chehalis River watershed since 1999.
The Chehalis River watershed is located in western Washington state.
