  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: State of Washington
The principal rivers of western Washington are the Skagit, Snohomish, Duwamish, Chehalis, and Willapa, which flow to the ocean, and the Cowlitz, a tributary of the Columbia.
Washington's rivers and large bodies of water, especially Puget Sound and its tributaries, are rich in all kinds of commercial fish, shellfish, and their by-products, such as glue and guano.
Washington's chief charm and source of revenue lie in its forests with their wild vegetation of dogwood, madrona, maple, cottonwood, and alder and their gigantic trees.

 Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis
Today, the way of life of the Chehalis people is quite a bit different, but there is still much to be learned from the ways of the past and from the people who lived on this land since time immemorial.
The name "Chehalis" (meaning "sand") originally referred to a village near the present-day town of Westport and later came to be applied to the river and to the people living upriver.
The Upper Chehalis inhabited the territory from Cloquallum Creek to the upper reaches of the Chehalis River.

The Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis
The Chehalis River watershed, which extends from the foothills of the Cascade Mountains to the Pacific Ocean in southwest Washington State, was home to bands of Salish-speaking Indians for numerous generations before the advent of pioneers.
Two main tribes, the Lower Chehalis and the Upper Chehalis, inhabited that area, between Grays Harbor in the west and the headwaters of the Chehalis River to the southeast.
Their winter village dwellings, constructed of large cedar planks, were placed perpendicular to the streams; occupants could view the water from one end.

The history of Southwest Washington State
But since this is Chehalis.Net we want to focus on our somewhat overlooked region in the middle, the region generally referred to today as the southwest Washington that includes the modern counties of Clark, Pacific, Cowlitz, Wahkiakum, Skamania and Lewis, where the town of Chehalis is located and the home of Chehalis.Net.
While there is not a natural border to the north of the southwest Washington region the Pacific Ocean forms the western border and the Columbia River forms the southern border.
It was also in 1812 that war broke out between Britain and America and in 1813 the British sent the Sloop Raccoon to enforce their claim to the river and the region.

 Village Descriptions--Nisqually-Olympia
Village was on the flats near the river bed rather than on the adjacent high prairie land.
In the old days this was an important village; by the mid-1800s this site had "three houses on the head of that Oyster Bay where they were drying salmon at that creek." The people from this village moved into the Nisqually reservation at the time of concentration.
This was a large village at a strategic location, and its name was sometimes extended to refer to all the people in villages 14-17 as well as village 19.

The existence of the empty village was not unusual for the time of year, since this was a summer village of the Chinooks and other tribal groups, such as the Chehalis.
At the highest spot they could find, the Corps landed and, using boards from the village houses, created a campsite which they named “Station Camp.” Early photographs of this area, now called McGowan, indicate that the shoreline was as much as several hundred feet south of the present location on US 101.
During the 1850s, the village – known as ‘Chenooke’ for many years – became known as Chinookville and is the current location of St. Mary’s, which was built as part of a Catholic mission once mounted in the region.
