Chek Lap Kok was one of the two islands (the other being Lam Chau) merged together via land reclamation techniques into to the 12.48 km² platform for the current Hong Kong International Airport.
The original farming and fishing villages on the island were relocated to Chek Lap Kok Village (赤鱲角村) on Lantau Island.
Also, the Romer's Tree Frog (Philautus romeri) on Chek Lap Kok, a unique species of finger-sized frog found only in Hong Kong, has found its new habitat on Lantau Island before the construction of the airport.

With the commencement of construction in 1990 Chek Lap Kok became a building site and home for over 25,000 workers who daily toiled over the now unrecognisable landscape as it was swallowed up in to the new airport area.

When Ian Ayson and his fellow pioneers arrived on Chek Lap Kok in 1992, the granite island’s area was only 302 hectares (746 acres), and the surf of the South China Sea could be heard everywhere on the island.
Apart from the gigantic platform itself, the most impressive structure on Chek Lap Kok is the eight-storeyed air-terminal building, 1.27 kilometres long, with a total floor area of 560’000 square metres (more than six million square feet) and an enormous, aerodynamically shaped roof that can resist typhoons.
A complicating factor was that the upper strata of the seabed around Chek Lap Kok island were geotechnically too unstable a foundation for an airport.

The airport, called Chek Lap Kok, finally opened in Jule this year, having some problems with the automatic luggage transport system.
There are about 3 or 4 different Sceneries for Chek Lap Kok available, I decided to choose this one, as it's the only one having photorealistic Terminal Buildings and it adds several buildings to the default Kowloon area.
Of course there are some downsides at Chek Lap Kok as well: the jetways are too small, the door of a B777 or even a Jumbo is much higher (picture 2) Several details have been added around the airports.

The original geological data on the two islands, Chek Lap Kok and Lam Chau, were a map made by the Hong Kong Geological Survey in 1967-69 with Leica equipment, and an update made in 1989.
Original topographic data were prepared by the Hong Kong Government Survey and Mapping Office in 1979-80, using Leica aerial-survey cameras and stereoplotting equipment.
