As currently interpreted (Gaffney and Meylan, 1988), Chelidae is the sister group to Pelomedusoides (see Podocnemis, Pelusios, and Hamadachelys); these groups are united by the unique characters of Pleurodira including the processus trochlearis oticum, a jaw muscle pulley arrangement (see Gaffney website).

The family Chelidae (Gray 1831a) has Gondwanan origins and first registers in the lower Cretaceous period of Patagonia (Fuente 1997).

ETI - Turtles of the World: Temperature-dependent sex determination
With the exception of the genera Platemys (XY, Chelidae), Staurotypus (XY, Kinosternidae), and Siebenrockiella (XY) and Kachuga smithii (ZW) (Bataguridae), turtles lack heteromorphic sex chromosomes (either XY male heterogamety, or ZW female heterogamety); their mechanism for sex determination is different than in humans.
The smaller sex is typically produced at the coolest incubation temperatures.
Incubation temperature seems to have no great influence on sex ratios in turtles of the family Chelidae.

Divergence dates of 8-16 million years ago for eastern and western H. maximiliani populations fit orographical activities resulting in Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira mountain uplifts during Pliocene and Miocene.
Since the genetic variation of this turtle seems to be structured according to the natural hierarchical system of rivers and streams within drainages, management programs involving translocations between different regions across the geographical range of H. maximiliani should be viewed with caution.
